Run into some old friends from another group or board? Want to do a little schmoozing, talk over old times? Or just some off topic stuff, then this is the place.
Early Seseme Street episodes are coming out on DVD, but it is warned that they shouldn't be watched by little kids. There's just too much bad stuff in it.
Give me a friggin break, generations of children watched these early episodes and weren't horrified by it. Kids don't look deeply into story lines and see things that probably aren't there like adults do (and they say kids are the ones with imaginations!), they just see that Big Bird and his buds are on TV. And it taught kids how to count and do the alphabet, but in a fun way.
I hate the PC crowd stuck in their Ivory Towers oblivious to the real world and how it works .
If you ask me the episodes aren't suitable for a certain group. But its not the children that need to stay away.

I agree with your outlook on it and wish the PC crowd would leave the program alone. Give the Cookie Monster his damned cookies back!
However, I think it's unclear what they mean by the warning.
These early ‘Sesame Street’ episodes are intended for grown-ups, and may not suit the needs of today’s preschool child
It sounds to me like they're saying "This is an out-dated learning device" kind of like an old text book and not "This is going to make your children grow up to be murders" like they would have you believe about video games.

I'm not quite sure if thats the case, if it was I think they'd just say it rather than saying the program is for adults. They are just afraid the mean streets and such are too much for today's children. And that Snuffolufagus is only a figment of Big Bird's imagination because he gets high. I don't know about you, but as a small child I never made those kind of assumptions because simply I was oblivious to drugs and the such. Also, the streets being dumpy and gruesome didn't worry me as a child; I only cared that Oscar, Bert, and Ernie were funny. I didn't realize they lived in the slums.
You're all missing the real problem with Sesame Street these days. It's the freaking Elmo show. I recently saw SS for the first time in years at a friend's house with his kids. It was like 50-60% Elmo. Who is this guy? He wasn't around when I was a kid.

That's true. Elmo is way overused. There isn't enough of the other characters anymore. I liked it before when everyone was used pretty much equally.
Kermit was able to do TWO shows, when he was on the Muppet Show AND Sesame Street.
And Geoff, we all know you watch it every day, no need to hide it..

When my kids were little, Sesame Street was one of the few things they watched that I could stomach. As far as I'm concerned those shows were suitable for kids AND adults.
The A-Team showed that no one was ever killed in combat - EVER.
Flipped jeep on a mine - looks bad, but no deaths.
Machine gun riddles a van with holes - scary, but no deaths.
Wall blown off the side of a building - great escape, but no deaths.
Perhaps if kids watched more scary things, perhaps if they found out early that the world isn't a Barbie and Ken beach party, they would grow up to to take some responsibility for their democracy and reject news shows filled with stories about Paris Hilton or from pundits that base their news on the talking points of the day.
Seseme Street was just fine, and so was the more teen Muppet Show. Mr. Cooper didn't leave the show because he moved; he left because he died, and that took courage to tell children.
Yeah, Seseme Street isn't as good as it once was, because it is just as much about selling Elmo now as it is teaching children to count, but it was once great television for children.
Give me Seseme Street over Dora and Dragon Tails any day.

I agree with all you said. Everyone in my generation grew up just fine, becauselike I said, parents actually took responsibility for their children, rather than not paying attention to them and blaming their troubles on radio and TV. Its sad that Sesame Street had to change because parents are lazy nowadays.

It's thanks to those damned Tickle-Me-Elmo dolls. They made a mint on those and have been pushing Elmo ever since.
I'm tired of things being changed because a certain group doesn't like them.
How about this idea; Instead of ruining a perfectly good TV show, why not just make a new show and have your kids watch those.

Let me get this straight, you are arguing that we should be showing children MORE violence...that instead of our children watching an "unrealistic" A-Team show, they should have show people getting limbs blown off? This seems to be what you are implying although I dont think its what you are meaning.

I dont see anything wrong with the old SS shows or any of the old primetime shows for that matter. I grew up watching Archie Bunker and didnt become a bigot for example.
Parents IMO are definately doing a worse job with their children. Thats not to say that there arent tons of great parents and great kids but there seems to be more parents/kids that are having issues than in the past.
