Poll: Your First Vikings Head Coach

Post by Mothman »

I'm curious to know when the fans here started following the Vikes.

Grant was the coach when I began following the team (and it wasn't in '85).

I started after superbowl 5. I was a cowboys fan as a kid then I saw the Vikes on TV the next season when the cowboys beat the dolphins in the next superbowl. Long time waiting Sigh, Sigh, sigh,

Well I have followed and liked them since the Green era but, living an hour outside of STL, was a Rams fan until they moved. So Zimmer would be my "first" as a true Vikings fan.

I might have replied only one or two times on here, but I miss the purple people eater days. Bud Grant, early 1970’s.

It was borderline but i had to go with Dennis Green since I didn't really starting watching weekly and understanding until around the 1993 season. (coincidentally around the same time i got heavy into football cards)

Bud Grant here. Born in 64 and was wearing Vikings pjs by time I was walking. I was brought up right. The day that Drew Pearson pushed off on Nate Wright.. the beginning of refs screwing us for me.. on the stupid Hail Mary pass was the 1st time my mom heard her little son drop the F bomb. Thankfully Dad was as mad as me and gave me a pass lol

Bud Grant, the later years.

Jerry Burns was my favorite though. He sounded like a drunk from any bar in NE MPLS (say, Mayslacks) when he gave pressers. One of my all time favorite videos, one I go to if life is tough and I need a laugh, is Burnsy cussing his way through a press conference. The guy was just so authentic and so upper midwestern. I've lived in far away places for a good chunk of my life. Burnsy is like comfort food that reminds me of home.

Edit to add:
This video's not safe for work, but listen to how he goes to bat for Schnelker, his coordinator. Pretty darn interesting in light of the recent firing of JDF and questions swirling about Zimmer being a player's coach, but maybe not a coordinator's coach.

I remember that press conference well! It's classic Burns. He really was a likable guy.

I think I remember the 85 year with Bud Grant (I was 10 years old), but Jerry Burns was coach when I really started paying attention.

Introduced to the Vikings in the 1st or 2nd grade and been cursed ever since (born in 67). Wouldn't have it any other way though. It's going to be sweeeeet when the Vikings win their first SB.
