If we have to lose a young core player?

Waynes.. Since We have a total of 3 first round picks and 2 second rounders on our secondary..
Then Sheldon Richardson, simply because he hasn't done anything in purple yet.
How can you say Sheldon is one of our young "core" players?
He hasn't even played one snap for us, and without him we were already one of the best D-lines in the league..
I don't see how anyone voted for Barr, Hunter, or Diggs...

I'm not going to count Richardson yet. So my vote went towards Waynes because they are most prepared to replace him with Hughes.

I voted Hunter because I had to vote one
of them.
I think Barr and Diggs are the most likely
to jump. Diggs seems like his ego might
want top money at wide out. Barr seems
inconsistent at times. I am wondering how
his UCLA buddy getting paid first will effect
him, going forward.

Barr holding out of OTA's isn't a good
sign and I don't think Zimmer will
appreciate that.

I don't think Barr is holding out, he's in a contract year so probably doesn't want to risk injury like what happened to Hunter Henry. I believe he will be at mandatory minicamp in June.

Re: If we have to lose a young core player?
Unfortunately, I don't think we'll have the fortune to only lose one of these guys. I think realistically we'll only be able to keep a couple (wishing for three). My hope would be that those two are Diggs and Hunter, as I think they probably have the biggest upside and looking at the rest of the roster, have the most they can contribute. Obviously hard to judge on Richardson yet, but I've been under the impression since he was signed that he was a hired gun for a season only. One nice bit I heard about next year's draft class from the experts (if Richardson is gone), is it is supposedly a very good and deep DL class....
So I voted for Waynes. I agree with everyone else in saying that Waynes is the most expendable because of the depth we have at the position and I feel is the least standout player of the group. But looking ahead, the cornerback depth is going to fade quite a bit next year if Newman is gone and Alexander doesn't produce.
Unless the Vikes continue to draft well and their defensive players develop, this may be the last year of the really dominant defense we've seen the past few years.

I agree, it was reported that he was seen speaking with Zimmer and absent a new deal is probably going to skip any voluntary aspects of the offseason. Smart move absent a contract, especially when you read stories about the few players who've torn ACLs already during OTAs.
Man, I kind of feel for the Chargers. They just haven't been able to catch a break in that department for a few years now it seems.

Without a new contract, Barr's agent recommended he get injury insurance before participating in team activities. Barr waited until that was complete, then came to the second week of OTAs.
Barr will get paid. He's too good not to.
Go ahead. I dare you.
Underestimate this man.

Re: If we have to lose a young core player?
I agree but I wonder if it will be by someone else though. It seems he would be a better schematic fit, and has more value, for a 3-4 defense as opposed to ours. Primarily due to his abilities as a pass rusher.J. Kapp 11 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 03, 2018 9:47 pm And again, an update.

Re: If we have to lose a young core player?
I don't think Zimmer would draft a guy he felt wasn't a good schematic fit. More than his pass rushing abilities, I think it's Barr's lateral movement that sets him apart from most LB's. He can cover an incredibly amount of space due to his athleticism, which is big in Zim's scheme.MikethePurple wrote: ↑Mon Jun 04, 2018 3:07 pm I agree but I wonder if it will be by someone else though. Re: If we have to lose a young core player?
I don't think he's a bad fit within our scheme or am not trying to say he doesn't have value, I'm just thinking based on how salaries are distributed around the league, pass rushers are paid more than inside linebackers in a 4-3 scheme. He may be able to increase his market value on a team that would utilize those skills on a more regular basis, and looking at what skill sets are in higher demand around the league, he may have more value in that sense on a 3-4 team.S197 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 04, 2018 3:51 pm I don't think Zimmer would draft a guy he felt wasn't a good schematic fit. Re: If we have to lose a young core player?
I suppose he could be paid more as a pass rush specialist in certain 3-4 systems although I don't think he's really garnered enough of a reputation to get paid big time for that role. His sack numbers have declined every year since he entered the league. He only had 1 sack last year. Some of that is a product of how he was utilized, Zimmer seems to have dialed back the aggressiveness quite a bit from our LB's but I think the stats would still give teams pause. I don't want to say he's prototypical for a 4-3 OLB (he's not an ILB) but I think he fits that role well even if he is a big guy.MikethePurple wrote: ↑Mon Jun 04, 2018 4:22 pm I don't think he's a bad fit within our scheme or am not trying to say he doesn't have value, I'm just thinking based on how salaries are distributed around the league, pass rushers are paid more than inside linebackers in a 4-3 scheme. Barr is a tough one because he'll command the biggest contract and doesn't have that high motor where he'll go full on every down.

Re: If we have to lose a young core player?
Yes, sorry my mistake about the ILB thing. I think my larger point was more about the pay disparity for pass rushing OLBs in a 3-4 scheme and OLBs in a 4-3 scheme. And the fact that Barr may want to see what kind of price he would receive on the open market in more of that role (or use that as a bargaining chip in contract negotiations with the Vikes) as he has shown proficiency in pass rushing when given that task. He definitely hasn't proven his pass rushing effectiveness completely but you see plenty of teams who are willing to give up a lot of money for potential and traits they think will work with their team. It's schocking when you see some players hit the market and how much they receive when teams are bidding for their services (I would have never expected the contract McKinnon received even though I think he's a good player).S197 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 04, 2018 8:44 pm I suppose he could be paid more as a pass rush specialist in certain 3-4 systems although I don't think he's really garnered enough of a reputation to get paid big time for that role. I don't disagree with you that he is a talented player who I'd like to keep, but I'm just worried if they give him a large pay day there may not be money to go around to players who I think have a higher ceiling of making an impact on the team or who play positions that have a higher price tag like Diggs and Hunter.
I guess it's just a wait and see and it's up to the front office.....

Re: If we have to lose a young core player?
This is exactly what I am worried about which I mentioned in the Vikings Free Agency thread. I think Richardson can be more of an impact player than Barr too. I really dont want us to give Barr a contract. Diggs and Hunter are top priorities and based on how Richardson does this year, same goes for him.MikethePurple wrote: ↑Tue Jun 05, 2018 2:25 pm
