Vikings trade for Vedvik

Born in Norway. Can kick and punt well. We gave up a 5th next year. Could save a roster spot.

Very interesting. They gave up a 5th (not booze ... a draft pick) so they must be serious about him. And with good reason. The guy just made 4-for-4 field goals (including a 55-yarder), 2-for-2 extra points, and averaged 55.5 yards punting in Baltimore's first preseason game.

This dude could put two people out of a job.

I was coming here to post this was already here. Kapp I was thinking the same thing. This could mean 2 roster spots, if they called on him to perform both kicking duties, giving the Vikes the opportunity to release Bailey and Wile. Of course it does bring up the issue of the holder for FGs, but it also brings up the question, were we already thinking GB about this scenario given the reports of then trying Beebe and Theilen on FGs. Quite the mystery. Lol. How cool though a person of Nordic descent as a Viking. Gotta love that.
Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Just keep Zimmer away from this kicker.
I wonder if someone on the team could be a backup punter for emergencies.

Bailey was struggling in camp so not super surprised.

The Pioneer Press article (linked below) speculates the Vikings are looking at him more for punting than kicking. It seems logical we’d kill two birds with one stone, and have him do both, but I wonder how practical it is to have your punter also placekick. Does a leg get tired over the course of a game? I don’t know, I never played.

I could see us use him as punter, holder, and kick off specialist. Bailey’s kickoffs are not very deep.

Will he do both jobs? Isn't it hard enough to do one really well? I think it's a little late in the game to be doing this. If both our guys blow don't you think that should have been known already and fixed before camp. If he gets both jobs can you imagine the scenario if he misses a chip shot FG and then has to punt. Then the punt is shanked. Then what? Let another player punt and/or kick FGs. Didn't they learn anything from last year when our FG kicker couldn't make a FG? That cost us a game and the playoffs. Wait Cousins lost that game. They cut the kicker for the heck of it and couldn't cut Cousins because of the contract. Bottom line this would be fine if it was a vet that had a track record. Like an old Stenerud. This guy has done nothing. Can't even win a job on his current team. Usually a team cuts the veteran if they have a young stud waiting. CAP savings.

You have an uncanny knack for finding the negative in everything.

Vedvik "can't win a job on his current team" because a guy named Justin Tucker, the most accurate kicker in the history of the NFL, happens to be the kicker for the Ravens. He was a rookie last year and impressed everybody before he was attacked and hurt in East Baltimore and missed the season because of his injuries.

I'm sure you'll find something he did wrong there, too.

Also, Mike Zimmer is not impressed with four extra points. He said as much in his presser today.

And by the way, the idea that Thielen or Beebe may hold ... that's because Zimmer himself said they're having with all three areas of the kicking game -- snap, hold and kick.

But it's all the kicker, right?

I didn’t glean that from Zimmer’s presser. I only heard Zim say he liked Bailey and indirectly blame woes on instability at snapper and holder. By the way, I see we just informed McDermott of his release today.

I heard those things, too. But I didn't hear him say he thinks Dan Bailey is a great kicker. Here's his exact quote (because I'm a total nerd, I transcribed it word for word):

"I really like Dan Bailey. He's a very professional, mature kid. You know, we've been having some issues with the three ... you know, snap, hold kick kind of thing. Having two long snappers, I think that's adding to it a little bit because the timing is different. The holding we're working on quite a bit. So I like Dan."

To me, that's not saying he doesn't think Dan Bailey is part of the problem. He just said he likes Dan Bailey, and he pointed to other circumstances contributing to the issues -- which, by the way, have been evident virtually every day in practice. Anybody who follows Zimmer at all knows that unless comes right out and said that you're a good PLAYER, as he has done for guys like Barr and Thielen, then you're not safe. He's cut other guys he likes. Did he ever once say Case Keenum was a good quarterback? Not that I recall, but I certainly recall his horseshoes comment, among others.

If Vedvik comes in and drills everything in sight, Dan Bailey will be looking for a job.

EDIT: I'd like to add this.

As pointed out in The Daily Norseman today, the Vikings have now spent two 5th-round and one 7th-round picks on kickers and long snappers in the past year. That means they think it's pretty important. So if they indeed think it's that important, it seems like a good idea to DEVELOP these guys and not cut them after, say, two games.

EDIT 2: Here's another possibility.

The Vikings could cut Wile and keep Bailey, using Vedvik as the punter and kickoff specialist, as well as backup kicker if something happens to Bailey. Zimmer was openly critical of Wile during his presser, especially his directional kicking. Hate to say it, but the Vikings' kicking situation just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

Well, one thing is for certain. We don't have to worry about 2 long snappers anymore. So that issue has been resolved.

That could be a possibility, then replace Bailey when his contract is up. It’s all rather strange right now.

I know Tucker is the best ever with FG pct. He hit 97 pct one year and also 82 pct one year. That's a big swing but it could have been the snapper or holder that caused it. I also think they could have rec a better draft pick for him. Bailey hit 86 pct which is number 5 all time. That's dam good no matter how you slice it. This new guy is an unknown and I think he made 62 pct of FGs in college. Hate to be negative but that seems low to me. But he may be our new punter. He avg 44 his last year in college which is very good. So maybe that's his spot. Anyway several teams were after this guy and we got him.

Wasn't Wile one of the few legitimate bright spots for the team last season? He helped tilt field position a few times , including against the Bears in the last game. I could be wrong but I thought he did quote well.

I like this idea. They need to have two kickers on the roster, I think. Going into the season with just one is a bad idea. Especially in the vein of keeping the person kicking our field goals fresh. The Vikings often get into defensive battles that require a lot of punting, I could see that wearing a person down in addition to kick offs, extra points, etc.
