Conservative Playcalls on 3rd and Long
I HATE that teams have all started doing this now. It NEVER works. What ever happened to being aggressive and throwing it deep? If you are just going to give up, why not just punt on 3rd down? It is so cowardly and just makes my blood boil.
The Devil whispered in the Viking's ear, "There's a storm coming." The Viking replied, "I am the storm." #SKOL2018

I agree depending on field position. If you're already in FG range(and have a decent kicker, not sure we qualify), you don't want to do anything stupid to take away a scoring opportunity. Or if you are so backed up you need at least a few yards to help your punter. Other than that though, don't be running such low chance plays to pick up the 1st.

The problem is it's high risk to throw into a situation where the other team is game planning for you to throw. Most defenses do a deeper zone on 3rd and long so they can protect the pass but still have time to come up and stop the run if they need to. If I had to guess, teams just looked at the data. The shorter throws probably have about the same percentage chance of yielding a 1st down in that situation as the longer throws (since they're looking for pass anyway) but the risk of interception is higher.
I haven't sat down and spoken with any coaches, obviously, but that's my guess.

To piggy back on what Cliff was saying, your chances of getting Wallace/Diggs/Wright in space and making two guys miss is better than your chance of them catching it in double coverage.
