Moral Victory?

It kind of felt good for a while, didn't it? I was beginning to think this team wouldn't even be able to compete against the top half of the league. But we did, and we came reasonably close to winning.
But I have to add the word "reasonably" because as soon as I saw us sputter on the goal line when we had 2nd and good from the 4, I figured we were in trouble. Chicago had way too much time left in the game and our D seemed to be relying on turnovers. In the end, we never came close to that turnover and they won the game with 10 seconds left AND a timeout in hand.
Ponder played reasonably well in the second half. Give him credit for making some big plays, one or two of which were actually with his arm. He wasn't perfect, but he wasn't the main culprit in that half. You can fault the play calling when we were near their goal line with 3 minutes left and had to settle for a field goal -- in fact, I would fault that play calling -- but then again, I'm not sure that's the main culprit either.
I think the bottom line is that our team is just not that good. Our offensive line isn't overwhelming, neither are our receivers, and nor is our D. I don't care how good the RB is -- you can't win with that package and without a fine QB, which clearly Ponder isn't. When Cutler needed a big drive at the end, our D couldn't stop him. When I heard the announcer say that the D-line is the strength of the D, I said out loud to my wife, "that's not saying anything." That D couldn't really stop the Lions last week just as they ultimately failed to stop the Bears this week. I don't want to think what will happen against the Packers.
Put our guys in the AFC North, and you might even be able to expect a good record. But in the NFC North, we need to be well above average in order to have a winning season. At this point, I don't see us that way. And in case you can't tell from the question mark in the title of this post, I don't believe in moral victories -- certainly not in week two against a team that didn't even make the playoffs last year.

How many moral victories does it take to win a Super Bowl?

No , we won't. This is NOT a terrible team. We lost by 1. Please give me a break. The team will bounce back and win next week. This was a fun game, just too bad we lost in the end.

Wrong again. This is a average team, that is coached bad from the top on down. We have been hanging on by gifts. But we have no wins, and I bet losing on 3/4 of the good stats. They didn't bounce back after last week, the D looked worse.
My moral victory will be when our coaches are tossed, and we get someone in here to teach these young players how to play football.

Hey, we'll beat the Browns next week so there's that!

It's an average team in a division where being an average team is below average. Heck, it might even be a slightly good team where being a slightly good team means you'll have a below average or average record. That's a shame.

Moral victory? I'm not sure I'd go that far, but they did some things in the second half to suggest that this team isn't completely incompetent. So maybe that will give them some confidence and they can build on it. If it hadn't been for that half, things would be grim right now.

But yeah Ponder actually resembled a NFL caliber QB there for a portion of the 2nd half, and then we #### the bed on that final drive. Hey Ponder is hot, lets go conservative and settle for a FG. It's like this team loves setting itself up for these type of defeats. Who cares how many timeouts the Bears have if we punch it in and go up 10? But no, it seems like we were overly concerned about burning the Bears timeouts than winning the game. I just don't get it. And don't get me started on that prevent garbage. I'm too frustrated with the morons running this team right now.

What moral victories are there in the pros?
I used to believe there were such things, but there aren't. Maybe in Pee Wee there are. Maybe in high school and even college there are. But not in the pros.
I am encouraged to see Frazier's presser after the game. Frazier clearly cares about his team and he put the result on his shoulders. I know he's going to be criticized for the outcome and playcalling on that last drive, but I have not lost any respect for Frazier after this. He had the cajones to go for it on two 4th down drives, and while I hate what happened on that last drive, the Vikes had every chance to win the game outright.
Being a fan of this team is so friggin hard. It's like watching a stripper who never quite takes it all off, but you can see she's got a great body. You hate it and you love it at the same time.

I think there are a number of problems with this team, but I think very few of any significance have to do with the head coach or even the OC. While Musgrave's scheme seems less than stellar, I am starting to understand that with a decent QB and an OL that can block even somewhat effectively, it will be successful. I only wish there was a way for it to be more successful with the personnel we have NOW. My coaching concerns lie with the OL coaching and LB coaching. Greenway is no slouch and I don't think Henderson is as bad as he has looked so far this season. There seems to be something amiss... As for the defense, is there a more effective scheme to play to some of our personnel's strengths?

i really have no problem with our coaching staff. yes there a few questionable play calls, but you have to finish even just one of those drives. if wright holds on, maybe it's a TD. didn't love the last 3rd down call. but the inability to finish drives and stop devin hester cost the vikings the game.
even though it was heartbreaking to lose in that way, i didn't think the vikings could keep it within a TD going in. after last week's uninspired performance and the way the game started, i'm encouraged that they fought back. next week is a must win but it's also a very winnable game. if they can win the next 2 (and i think they can), they'll have a fighter's chance.

really, sometihing has been off right from the start of preseason. i know those games mean nothing, but the 2nd half today was the best the team has played in all 6 of it's games. the bears are a decent team and we never play well there. something to build on for next week

I think there is a "moral victory" in how we played that 2nd half. We looked sloppy in preseason, we looked sloppy in week 1, we looked sloppy in the first half here but it looks like they found some things that started to work and click. Whether they can build on it or not is one thing but I have a feeling they can. In the end we lost both games on the road, so we're 0-2, but with a home game coming up against a some what average opponent it's the perfect time to get to 1-2.
