Confirmed.

Michael Jenkins - WR - Free Agent
Vikings released WR Michael Jenkins.

Jenkins was due an $825,000 salary, but the Vikings made sure to cut him before his $2.425 million March roster bonus came due. Per beat writer Tom Pelissero, the Jenkins move clears $3.25 million in cap space. Turning 31 in June, "Molasses Mike" has been an ineffective pass catcher for quite some time. He could resurface elsewhere as a No. 4 wideout who plays on blocking downs.

Who called him Molasses Mike? He wasn't that bad.

Pelissero.

He's slow. Roto predicts him as a #4 receiver that plays on running downs. Should tell you a little about his value.

I liked Michael, or as my friends and I call him, "Old Man Jenkins!"

However, with 2.5 million owed to him it was time to let him go. I now hope that Devin Arshomadu is not resigned and Stephen Burton is cut.

Leaving the Vikings with the following receivers under contract:

Percy Harvin
Jarius Wright
Stephen Burton
Greg Childs
Chris Summers

Might as well delete Greg Childs and Stephen Burton on that list. Chris Summers a practice squad dude?

We're getting a WR in round 1.

Always liked Michael Jenkins. Met him at a bowling alley in January and he was a good dude. My friends said he was with Webb but I somehow a.) didn't recognize him b.) see him

It's hard to look at that list and disagree. I can't imagine the Vikings going into the draft with that sorry lineup and saying something like "Wide receiver is really deep this year. We can draft a guy in the 3rd round and be happy."

I expect some action in free agency, but in the end I don't expect much real talent to be added to the wide receiving corps.

We knew this move was coming. I wonder if they'll re-sign him at a lower price or just move on.

Kinda saw that happening, too. You can't pay a guy starter's wages for a backup's productivity.

If they decide to give up on Simpson, I wouldn't mind seeing them bring him back for a little cheaper to compete for a 3rd or 4th spot. If nothing else, he was probably the most reliable receiver (including Harvin...considering his injuries) the Vikes had over the last two bad years.

Good. Get some young guys in here to compete for the spot. No use wasting a roster spot on a below average receiver like Jenkins.

That what I was wondering too.

I think I'll miss that legendary nickname more than him :D Okay, perhaps a little harsh. He's a really good guy but someone who's nearing the end of his career and made little impact on the field. We need difference makers, a fresh infusion of youth.

I had the same thought. However, the main problem with Jenkins is that his career is in decline.

Seems to me the Vikings will move on and try to bring better and younger playmakers into their WR corps.

Yup. I think the ball is in his court but if he comes back cheap, they'll probably re-sign him. Pelissero was rather unfair with his "ineffective pass catcher" remark IMO. The guy made some clutch catches in multiple games. I'd take him as a #4.

I wouldn't mind him for cheap.

He understands the game and can teach the position. I'd also take Simpson as a backup if he can't pull it together enough to start, just to be rid of the other guys at the bottom of the depth chart. Jenkins/Simpson would be a huge upgrade over Aroma/Burton IMO.
