Looking at cap space and salary, would you be in favor of releasing Winfield to free up money and cap space to sign Harvin?

No, not really. They've got at least 2 other wide receivers that aren't really earning their salaries.

I agree with Rus. The Vikings need both Winfield and Harvin. There are other players that aren't nearly as good.

I hope the Vikings aren't so cap weak that they have to dump one of their better players to keep another one.

Winfield is litterally one of the LAST to let go.

Winfield is still a decent tackler but he has seen his better days. He appears to be much slower now and he never was fast. I would take Harvin every time. If Winfield doesn't take a reduced salary he will be out the door. He seems to be a good team leader and I appreciate what he has done for the team but his days are numbered.

BS. Winfield knows the CB better then anyone on this team, including the coaches and HC. Hes the perfect cover 2 corner. We saw how lost everyone in the socndary was without him out there. Hes the kind of guy we need o this team. Plenty of other FAs can be dropped before him. And ofc his days our numbered. Maybe 2 more years, maybe.

There are some other ways for the Vikings to free up cap space. Here's a good summary. Jared Allen's cap number is the real killer, at over $17M.

Here's a bit more, specifically about fixing the problem with Allen's contract.

As to whether or not the Vikings should pay Percy Harvin a very large sum of money for what he brings to the table, I really don't care. Number one, it's not my money. But ultimately, I don't think it will have much bearing on whether the Vikings win a championship.

Pelissero says,
"Cornerback Antoine Winfield is older (35) but perhaps more likely to call the Vikings' bluff if they try to reduce his $7.25 million salary in the last year of his deal. A broken right hand hampered him late. The Vikings must cut Winfield a check for $2.5 million in play-time incentives before the league year, and that'll count against their 2013 cap, too. (They'd otherwise be nearly $15 million under the cap. No other major accounting issues are anticipated.)"
Time for the old guy to restructure (7.25 million salary) or "thanks for all you did for the team" but it is time to get younger, faster, and less costly. There are much better uses for all of thar cap money plus Josh Robinson is bigger 2 inches taller 20 lbs. heavier, stonger, faster and thirteen years younger. He is not the tackler that Winfield was in his prime (no one was) but he is still physical and his 4.3 speed makes up for a whole lot of inexperience.

Before asking Winfield to take a paycut, ask Loadholt. Hes so huge he can block, but he is slower then McKinny ever was at pass protection. I know LTs are hard to find, but good CB are HARDER for the Vikings to find. I love Winfield, he needs to retire as a Viking. I couldnt care less where Load ends up.

Nobody needs to retire as a Viking. Those days are long gone. You don't pay someone $7.5M because you like them.

How can they ask Loadholt to take a pay cut when he's not even under contract? Great negotiating tactic when trying to sign a guy, "Take less or we're letting you continue to be a free agent!".

7.5M for a slot corner and coaches assistant? Who's not in the future plans of this team? No thanks.

He is not the perfect cover corner lol, he is just the best orner we have by far, which is not saying much considering we have the 5th worst secondary in the league. THE WHOLE LEAGUE. Winfield is a great contributor to our D nut he is getting old. If he doesnt take a pay cut, I think he will be gone as well. I will say we need him and his leadership in that secondary, and we need to bring in some cb's from this draft that he can mentor. Our secondary SUCKS, we need two good corners to start. Josh is making headway but he is not a starter, and Cook has missed as many games as he has started.
Can say the same thing about JA...

Spot on, he's purple through and through and still a great asset to an inexperienced, young secondary. Although productive, Harvin's been a nightmare off the field, I'm not fond of superstar style players. Everyone should act equally, as a common goal of success is shared and nothing comes before that.
