Watching all the Super Bowl hoopla, I am sitting and trying to remember why we let Birk go..was he too expensive? did he have a couple real crappy seasons(not that I recall), or did he just piss off some coach that is no longer on the team?? He is clearly still playing well and a great leader on the field. Anyone willing to help job the memory of this old codger?

I might be remembering incorrectly, but I believe most of it was Birk not getting along with good old Chilli.

Birk chose to leave, it wasn't about money. Considering the Vikings have Sullivan, I don't see it as a loss. Birk is a great guy and a great player but he's in the twilight of his career, Sullivan can help anchor the line for many years to come.

I don't think money was a primary reason, but it was a reason. Birk was never money driven. I still remember his commercials and how much he helped the community...really great guy. I agree with Sullivan being a very competent replacement. I don't know if Sullivan will ever be the player Birk was, but Sullivan has exceeded expectations.
This has been beaten to death here since he left but it's been widely reported that the Vikings matched or exceeded the Ravens offer. Again, it wasn't about money.

Charley Walters: Ex-Viking Matt Birk chose Ravens with Super Bowl in mind
The Vikings matched the deal the Ravens extended. It came down to playing for John Harbaugh or Childress. He chose wisely, if you ask me.

That's like choosing between serving under Abraham Lincoln or Bozo the Clown. Not really much of a choice
