Stadium build thread

Five architectural and engineering firms bidding to design the new Vikings stadium will show off their résumés at an open house Thursday at the Metrodome.

Firms competing for the job are: AECOM, a Los Angeles-based company involved in designing the home of the NFL Seattle Seahawks; Ewing Cole, a Philadelphia firm that designed a new pro football stadium for the New York Giants and Jets; HKS Inc. of Dallas, architects for NFL stadiums in Dallas and Indianapolis; HNTB Corp. of Kansas City, which drew up plans for the new NFL stadium in Santa Clara. Calif., now under construction, and Populous, a Kansas City firm that designed the Twins' Target Field, the Wild's Xcel Energy Center and TCF Bank Stadium, home of the University of Minnesota football team.

The bid is for 2018, 2019 or 2020. The article states that the NFL would award the 2018 game in the spring of 2014. I'm betting that would be a little premature on their part, as the stadium construction wouldn't be very far along, and god knows what could happen.

MSFA, #Vikings jointly select HKS as stadium architect. MSFA board will vote to approve contract shortly. #newmnstadium
HKS designed two most recent NFL stadiums - Lucas Oil Stadium and Cowboys Stadium. #newmnstadium
Entire design services contract for HKS, including subcontractor design fees and reimbursable expenses, is for $34 million. #newmnstadium

Love that they're getting the same architect for Minnesota that designed Locas Oil and Cowboys. When it's all said and done, this thing is going to be tight. Hopefully with a retractable roof

Great choice! I can't wait to see what Zygiland's going to look like. I'm hoping for the retractable roof, too.

Just one thing I hope they do...make sure there aren't those annoying shadows on the field! Cowboys stadium has them and it's not fun to watch, I can only imagine how fun it is to play on, or be at in person.

Good point. I found that to be annoying as well when the Vikes were at Lucas Oil.

The Minnesota Vikings' architect selection for their new stadium, announced Friday morning, is revealing in at least one sense: Both NFL stadiums designed by the HKS Sports & Entertainment Group have retractable roofs.

I wonder if it's even possible to eliminate the shadows. It probably depends on the limitations of an open or retractable roof (ie: how far it can retract).

This does absolutely nothing for me. Might be a nice design for an opera house or a figure skating arena. Not a football stadium.

Ya that looks amazing, but obviously not one that can accommodate a retractable roof. Looks like it would let in a LOT of natural light, though.
