The Blue Angels are flying over Duluth as I type this, practicing for this weekend. Why? They're the star attraction at the Duluth Air Show! And, you know, there just ain't anything like seeing those trademark blue and yellow jets flying over your head!

Come on up and see them! Tomorrow and Sunday, July 10 and 20. Tickets are really reasonable. Family tickets are $45 in advance, $50 at the gate. Single adult $14/$17. Youth (15 and under) $10/$13. Kids 5 and under get in free. Gates open at 9:00 am both days.

Besides the Blue Angels (I'm pumped to see them), there'll be a P-38 simulating a strafing run (complete with explosions on the ground), an A-10 Thunderbolt (aka Warthog) strafing run, a heritage flight with planes that won WWII flying beside modern aircraft, and aerobatics. What more could you ask for?

And, a plus... the weather is going to be great up here for the weekend!

Last airshow I went to, they didn't have the Blue Angels. The Thunderbirds were there though, as well as Patty Wagstaff and the Extra 300, and a P-51 Mustang (which later flew along side an F-15). I've got some video and pics of it.

Patty's going to be here, too. And Greg Poe and John Klatt. And I just noticed that a B-24 Liberator is going to be at the show! Plus a P-51 Mustang and a P-40 Warhawk. It's going to be a history buff's dream!

I'm going to try to take pictures with my cheap point-and-shoot digital. Wish I had a digital SLR for this. I could take my film camera instead, but I don't have money for film and I don't happen to have a spare roll, either.

The Blue Angels have spent an hour or so flying over my house. I tried to take pics with the digital camera, but it's really hard to see the planes in the viewscreen with all the sunlight. But I think I got one good one. We'll see how it goes tomorrow. I'm charging up the battery so I'll be all set to go.

If any of you guys are going to be here Saturday morning, look me up at the DNT booth until noon.

Heh, I heard what sounded like a fighter overhead last weekend. Check the clock, sure enough, just about start of the Cubs game. Ran out on my deck. P-51 and an F-15 were circling to do a second flyover of Wrigley, then headed out.

I have fond memories of the Blue Angles from when I was a kid.....would be fun to see them again!

i wish i was going to the airshow. i love going to them. i have seen the Blue Angles once before. They are really cool to watch. All of the WWII planes and new jets would be so fun to watch as well. I'm jelous, take photos and post them please.

You can post them on one of the free sites like shutterfly or snapfish or kodakgallery and then post a link here.

I am partial to the Thunderbirds... but they are both fun to watch.

Air shows are fun but your neck can get sore.

Well, I'm back from the Air Show. My feet hurt! And I'm soaked. It started raining while the planes were flying. Unfortunately, they had to cut short the Blue Angels because of the weather, but what we saw was spectacular! And, it's not looking good for tomorrow according to the National Weather Service guys I talked to.

Getting pics with my point-and-shoot camera was hit and miss. But I did manage to get a couple of good ones. Unfortunately, I have no way to post them, but if you'd like to see them, email me and I'll send them to you.

Patty Wagstaff, John Klatt, and Greg Poe are maniacs in the air! Man, the things they do with their airplanes! It was totally awesome!

It was cool seeing the WWII vintage aircraft. A P-38 flew a heritage flight with the A-10 Warthog. It was neat seeing them fly side by side... two aircraft which were devastating in their effectiveness for their era flying together.

The P-38 means a lot to folks around here. It was the aircraft Poplar, Wisconsin native Richard I. Bong flew in WWII and which got him 40 official kills and the title Ace of Aces. (Poplar is a small town about 25 miles from Duluth.) Major Bong was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by General MacArthur in December 1944. Unfortunately, he was killed on August 6, 1945 while test flying the P-80 Shooting Star jet.

I know of him because he's the namesake of the not so well named Bong Recreation Area on the opposite end of the state (between Kenosha and Racine on 94 just north of the IL border). I would pass the sign and looked it up at some point. Was supposed to have been a much more aptly named Bong AFB that was never completed.

And he's the namesake of the equally not so well named 'Bong Bridge' between West Duluth and Superior. It used to be called the Arrowhead Bridge, but the renamed it when they built the new one.
