I had a great time, even though I did not ride in the cash cab. But, unfortunately, I came down with pneumonia while there and just got out of the hospital after two and a half days.

The featured event was incredible, John. This Macbeth is set in a Stalinistic Russia (although it remains Scotland) and it works. The set is quite stark, with a white tile wall as the backdrop to the set, with an elevator to stage right of the back. The white tile is used as screens for projections of Mayday parades in Moscow to set the tone for Macbeth's rule and to provide atmosphere for some scenes. It works well. There is a sink on stage right front, which various characters use to wash their hands, but which flows with blood when Lady Macbeth tries to rid her hands of the blood of Duncan. Chilling.

The entire cast is stellar, particularly the two leads. Of course, I am a little biased when it comes to the lead actor, but this is Shakespeare and he does Shakespeare better than he does Trek. Patrick's voice was a little hoarse on Saturday night, but it didn't affect the energy he put into his performance at all. Still it was a little painful to listen to once in a while when you know he's capable of so much more. Kate Fleetwood plays Lady Macbeth and she is much younger than Patrick. But it works for this production. He is the older, successful general with the trophy wife.

Macbeth will be transferring to Broadway a week after it closes in Brooklyn, so if you want to see it, you'll have a chance now. It won't sell out as quickly as it did at BAM, which has a tiny little theatre. The move will also make the play eligible for Tonys. And I'm sure it'll be nominated for quite a few. And it deserves them.

Other than the play, there was really no time for sight-seeing. I've been to NYC three times now and I have yet to set eyes on the Statue of Liberty. Now, I'm trying to figure a way to go back in May, when it's warmer and I'll be feeling better, to see Macbeth again. And the Statue of Liberty.
