The United States Navy finally goes on the offensive in the Pacific.

Naval task forces under the commands of Admirals Halsey (overall commander of the raid) and Fletcher attack bases in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands. Fletcher, whose flagship was USS Yorktown, and his task force targeted Makin, in the Gilbert Islands, and Jaluit and Mili in the southern Marshalls. USS Enterprise, Halsey's flagship, and her task force attacked Kwajalein, Wotje and Taroa (in the Maloelap atoll) in the northern Marshalls.

While the attacks did nothing to stall the Japanese offensive in the Pacific, they did serve notice that the US Navy was a force to be reckoned with and was not lying broken in the mud at the bottom of Pearl Harbor. And they served as a learning opportunity for sailors untested by battle. The lessons learned this day would help seal the Japanese fate four months later. At Midway.

I didn't realize the Navy waited that long to attack the
Japanese after December 7th.
