I don't believe there is a single one of us who thinks we shouldn't work to have a very good offensive line.

Worth a read:

This poster has really interesting takes. His approach is based specifically on Spielman, Zimmer and Kubiak and the kind of players they tend to target and who fit our scheme. His thoughts on OL are worth reading too.

I would love Lamb in this draft and his skill set is great....he is like a quicker Thelin. I just wonder th cost but if that is who they are wanting for this offense than go for it....the Falcons gave up a whole lot for WR Jones and that pick helped them get to a super bowl.

Odenigbo has A LOT of work to do against the run and needs more moves in the passing rushing game before he can be considered a starter.VikingsVictorious wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 8:57 pm100% disagreement. Odenigbo is not only ready to start he is ready to be very good. For the 3T we don't have a star but with the plethora of possibilities there we should be able to come up with somebody who doesn't totally suck. With 3 out of 4 good and one that hopefully doesn't totally suck we have a better than average D line. Can we upgrade? Yes. Is it a dire need? NO!!!StumpHunter wrote: ↑Sat Apr 04, 2020 6:07 pm
There are two good DL. Odenigbo was a solid rotational guy last season, he isn't good yet. Might be the next great DE, but he might also be the next Tom Johnson.
The vikings realistically need a big upgrade a 3 tech and LDE to be one of the better defenses next season. It's as big a gaping hole as WR and CB imo. Oh, and guard.
OL was already acknowledged as a need particularly guard. What was being discussed was the level of need for the DL which is IMO pretty minor. With how bad you think we are at almost every position I can't believe you expect us to get more than 2 wins.

This is his only start of his career, and there is no way Zimmer watches this film and thinks Odenigbo can start at DE. He was worthless against the run and even against the pass he flashed at times and got some pressure, but the majority of the time he might as well not even have been out there and got absolutely no push.
As of right now, he looks like the next Tom Johnson and nothing more. A guy who can come in fresh situationally and get some good pressure, but not start. Betting on him to be your starting edge guy would be a mistake, imo.
WR is a need, but maybe not in the 1st. Some of the guys who are falling to the 3rd in a lot of mocks look really good to me, like a Peoples and Johnson. The passing game is always going to be limited by the QB, but there is no limit on how good the defense can get. Let's build that up, draft some hogs on the Oline and beat good teams 13-10.

Re: WRs in Draft
I am honestly very good with adding Jefferson in the 1st. I would be ecstatic with Lamb, Jeudy, or Ruggs. Honestly, those are the only 4 1st rd WR I would want. I think that there's a lot of talent there, but not with our first 3 picks, unless we get 1 of the 3.

Re: WRs in Draft
Unless one of the bigger names fall to us, we shouldn't touch WR in the 1st. I am a huge believer that our team needs 3 quality WRs to make this offense as unpredictable as possible. However, the amount of talent in this draft is incredible. We have bigger needs at other positions and the drop off at those positions are higher.
OG
CB
3 TECH
OT
Guy I want the Vikes to look at in the 2nd round would be
Reagor - Only issue hands. His acceleration is unworldly.
Shenault - Limited route runner. If Patterson and Julio had a kid.
Pittman JR - Great hands. Physical but lacks some of the game-changing characteristics you want from a WR. His production though...
Chase Claypool - Everything you want but he is a body catcher.

Re: WRs in Draft
Here's a question. What does the Shanahan/Kubiak offense require from the WR position?
In my mind, the peak of that offense was the Broncos Superbowl seasons with McCaffrey and Rod Smith. Those guys weren't bad and they put up good production, but nobody really remembers them as elite players. Meanwhile, at RB, everybody they plugged in had success. The misdirection of this offense often schemes a lot of guys open, and maybe that makes route running and making contested catches somewhat less important in this scheme. Blocking is at a premium, but skill positions become less critical. Combining that with Cousins hesitancy to throw to guys until he sees them open makes me think guys with a high athletic ceiling who can be schemed open and make plays after the catch are a really good option.
Of course, I am hoping this is the last year we are hitched to Cousins, and that could add value to guys who can make those contested 1 on 1 plays going forward, but only the Vikings know for sure what direction they are planning to go and how committed they are to Cousins. I hope whatever plan they come up with is at least coherent. I'm tired of feeling like we're going in two directions at the same time.

Re: WRs in Draft
I think a team should build their WR core to handle a vast majority of situations. If you draft all 6 ft guys that are slight of frame and struggle with the press, you will have issues when you face bigger CBs who game plan is to press you all day. Right now we have a plethora of route runners. What we lack is a go up and get it guy, for the redzone. Adding a WR that can be that guys will give defenses fits trying to stop Rudy out wide and a 6'4 guy. That's what has hurt us in the redzone. Sometimes you just need a guy you can run a Fade with for easy points.fiestavike wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 2:28 pm Here's a question. Re: WRs in Draft
Only knock I have on the guy is that he isn't a hand catcher. Lots of body catches but... he is impressive. I wouldn't be made at taking Chase and someone like KJ Hamler.VikingsVictorious wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 8:26 pmChase Claypool come on down.YikesVikes wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 6:27 pm

Re: WRs in Draft
I predict that we will address WR in the 5th with Van Jefferson. He fits our mold.
1. Only Above Average speed
2. No 6'1
3. Excellent route runner.
4. Mature guy
5. Modest production at NCAA level.
We seem to value Route running over physical traits.

Re: WRs in Draft
I have heard this rumor of hands catcher recently in posts that somebody made. My understanding from the analysts and fans of Notre Dame is that he has great hands and catches everything in his zip code. I will look into it more.YikesVikes wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 10:15 pmOnly knock I have on the guy is that he isn't a hand catcher. Lots of body catches but... he is impressive. Van Jefferson might be available in the 5th. I'd be somewhat surprised. If you are suggesting he will be our first WR selected I will be very disappointed.YikesVikes wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 10:18 pm I predict that we will address WR in the 5th with Van Jefferson. He fits our mold.

Re: WRs in Draft
Great hands doesn't mean you aren't a body catcher. I define a body catcher based on what one does when the crunch is on. High-pressure situations. Big 3rd downs etc. He brings a lot of balls in to the chest and secures them there. Even when he jumps up.VikingsVictorious wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 10:18 pmI have heard this rumor of hands catcher recently in posts that somebody made.
