Lets put it this way: if I had to choose Adrian or the field for leading rusher (assuming Adrian plays all 16 games), I'd take Adrian.

More at the link."I'm sure the Vikings already have data on essentially what does the public think of having a person like Adrian on our team," said George John, a marketing professor and associate dean at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. "It's kind of like TV anchors, they have these Q scores. ... They're putting their best foot forward and saying we'd like to have him back if conditions are met. ... We teach in marketing that whether it's good news or bad news, it's best to get ahead of something."
http://espn.go.com/blog/minnesota-vikin ... -4-million"Jared Allen had a $17 million cap number [in 2013], and they let him play that out," said a source who works on NFL contracts. "Adrian at $15.4 million is a better value than that. Maybe you kick the can down the road for a year, and see where you're at."
Said Baratz: "If you've got a young QB, and an absolute monster like Adrian Peterson, he frees everything up. I've never been one that's gotten caught up in, 'This is what the top running back makes.' When you get into the category of being one of the more dominant players in the league, you should get paid like one."

I'd say a lot comes down to the draft. While I don't think RB has recently been a valued position in the draft, this crop of rookies makes a pretty compelling case to buck the trend, and I could see Spielman spending a high pick on one and not regretting it.dead_poet wrote:Another good article detailing Peterson's contract:

It is interesting and probably indicative of some other factors working well for them too. Thanks for putting that info together for us.Raptorman wrote:With the idea of Peterson possibly not coming back this year I thought I would take a look at how many points the Vikings scored when he played vs not playing in the game. Now, I understand that there is more to points being scored than Peterson playing or not playing. So these should be taken somewhat with a grain of salt. I also put in the scores of the games he did not play in.
Games played in since 2007
20+ rushes per game. Average points per game. 26.0 Win percentage. .648
>20 rushes per game. Average points per game. 20.2 Win percentage. .320
Games not played in. Average points per game. 20.4 Win percentage. .348
Then I figured , well that includes a good year with Favre at QB and so I looked at just the last 5 years and came up with this.
20+ rushes per game. Average points per game. 25.1 Win percentage. .586
>20 rushes per game. Average points per game. 18.4 Win percentage. .207
Since he only missed 2 games prior to his time period, the stats didn't really change.
It looks like the Vikings score about and extra TD when Peterson is in the game. Would that have made a difference this past year? Well if you want to be a homer and just add a TD for the Vikings to all the games and not modify the other teams, the Vikings would have been 12-4.
Now, I did notice something interesting this past year. Since he only played in the first game the Vikings had to adjust to him not being there. So, did they? Well if you break the season down to the 15 games Peterson did not play in it looks like this.
First 5 games. 14 points per game 1 - 4. .250
Second 5 games. 19.6 points per game 2-3 .400
Third 5 games. 24.6 points per game. 3-2 .600
So what does it all mean? Probably not a whole lot. But it is interesting that when he is in the game, and rushes for 20+ attempts per game the Vikings do pretty well.
@TomPelissero #Vikings GM Rick Spielman more definitive than in past today: "We expect Adrian Peterson to be a part of our football team."
@murphPPress Spielman today: "We expect Adrian Peterson to be part of our football team.'' 2/15/13: "We have no intent of trading Percy Harvin." #Vikings

That's the question. Probably comes down to $$, as it usually does.losperros wrote:
Good point. Then again, Harvin wanted out. Does Peterson?
