The problem wasn't that they couldn't get yards on 1st and 2nd, it was that converting on 3rd down was a near impossibility.
They were the 11th worst at converting on 3rd down, despite having the 8th shortest distance to gain.
Thanks for looking that up. That's higher than I would have thought. The short yardage woes doesn't surprise, it seemed like 3rd and 4th and short were always a challenge. Even red zone running.
I feel like Murray was fairly solid in the red zone. Either way, you would think that when teams know you’re going to pass non-stop, you’d counter it with running. And flip just didn’t do that. He didn’t want to. Flips way of playing “catch-up” was putting the game entirely in Cousins hands.
Against New England, cook had 6 carries for 70 yards in the first half and we were down 10-7. In the 2nd half, cook had 3 carries for 14 yards (still averaging nearly 5 yards a carry) and we lost 24-10. Sounds like a perfect time to bail on the run......the guy just didn’t have a clue.
Murray carried the ball 5 times vs the saints for 30 yards in the first half. Averaging 6 yards a carry against the #1 run defense in the nfl and he got 5 carries in the half and somehow we were still in the game. Murray also had a 23 yard run that half that was called back for Elflein holding.
After cooks 70 yard run vs Detroit he carried the ball 4 times the rest of the game. And that run happened in the 2nd quarter.
Against Seattle, we were down 3-0 and cook carried the ball 5 times the rest of the game and we went down 3-0 halfway through the 2nd. He was averaging almost 5 yards per carry at that point.
All that right there explains two things, flat out ignoring the run game and being completely clueless as to what you have for talent in your backfield. This team COULD run the ball. Flip simply refused to and panicked anytime this team was down by the slightest amount
