Gruden QB Camp: Teddy Bridgewater

The next segment features Bridgewater’s first pass, which is a deep route for an interception–an awful throw. Gruden asks if Bridgewater remembers it.

“I remember it like it was yesterday,” responds Bridgewater, whose smile includes his eyes–a sign it’s a genuine smile. Bridgewater’s hands are still at the table with the fingers interlaced. There’s a pattern of behavior in this show where Bridgewater seems to show comfort with unpleasant events. One might examine his reactions to these events and determine he revels in the fact that he was strong enough to overcome them.

Seems well beyond his years. 21 years old? Handles himself very well. The thing that I really like about him is he seems very humble and not cocky at all. After he dove into the end zone on that running play most QB's would have done some kind of celebration (spike the ball or whatever). He just casually ran over and gave a fan a slight high 5. Just goes about his business. Love it.

Look at this graph.

The percentage of 300 yard games thrown by Vikings QB's since Favre left. That's either the most pitiful thing I've ever seen (thinking about the last four years) or the most hopeful thing (thinking about the future of this team).

I wish the graph would show more than just the percentage of 300 yard passing games by qb, as by itself, that graph is pretty meaningless. Now if it included the number of games each qb has played in and what percentage of 300 yard passing games compared to total games played, then that would be more meaningful. As Vikings fans we pretty much know what those figures are, but to the casual observer, that graph has little meaning.

I thought of it as less "informational" and more ironic. Everyone knows that it's one for one for Teddy, Cassel has had about ten stats, and Ponder has had a couple dozen. Bridgewater should have just a tiny slice of the pie in the last four years/40-some games.

What impresses me is how Teddy is hitting his guys in stride. Watch the last drive of the first half again. It's a thing of beauty. He hits McKinnon in stride to pick up a big first down, and then hits Wright the same way. So many of our passes make the running back stop to make the catch.

I was thinking this during the game: I don't remember when the last time we had a QB who could throw an out route like Teddy. Maybe never, but it might go back to Jeff George. Obviously Favre was once the best at it, but not when he was with us. He looks like a star, not to jinx us but yeah.

I really don't recall anyone calling Teddy a bust in preseason. The only controversy was about whether or not Teddy should be the starting qb, not that he was a bust.

Well, to be fair, people were comparing TB to Ponder after his first preseason appearance. Depending on how you feel about Ponder, that could be seen as calling TB a "bust". Either way... way too early to be telling people to eat crow. I sure hope any TB haters (doubters?) will have to eat crow at the end of this year... then at the end of next year when we go deep in the playoffs... then at then end of numerous upcoming years when he's a super bowl MVP.
