Twyman is a good prospect, but he opted out of the 2020 season and he had one solid year of tape prior to that for the 2019 season. Granted, what he put on that tape was really good, but he's kind of emblematic of the DT's coming out this year. There are some good prospects that, for one reason or another, just aren't solid 1st rounders. They might have the tools and talent to merit high selections, but haven't done it consistently enough or long enough to be safe value choices in the upper half of the 1st round. There are so many examples of guys who put in a strong year in college only to take a step back the following year when offenses had more tape on them and could better gamplan to deal with them. Twyman could be a player like that. I'd say this - if Spielman really likes one of the QBs in this year's draft then he needs to pull a Kansas City Chiefs and move up to get him. Without having that 2nd rounder that is going to be tougher, but if the Vikings brain trust thinks there is a franchise QB in this year's draft, then move up and make it happen. Nobody worth that sort of move is going to make it to where the Vikings pick in the upcoming draft.
IMO if Speilman sees a QB that he likes he will get him. That has been proven. He traded back into Rd 1 to get Bridgewater. Sometimes guys do slip. Marino, Brady, Rodgers, Montana and probably more. There is no Andrew Luck type of prospect in this draft. The list gets jumbled every day. This guy from FL all of the sudden has an NFL arm. Last year he didn't. There's nothing exact about the draft. People getting big bucks miss more than they hit. The Chiefs did a great job. But they thought they didn't do enough when the Bears traded up. But if they sit, once again barring some miraculous occurrence, I see either a small trade down or staying put and taking the BPA, which as it is shaping up so far this year, looks like it should be someone who has a good chance of seeing the field early and often in their career. That player won't be a QB.

I like Mattison but he's injured again this year when we need to give Cook reduced carries. Since the Vikings emphasize the run so much, I wouldn't mind seeing another viable option for 10+ carries a game.

I'm assuming you mean how we did drafting in spring of 2020? I think we did well. JJ is obviously a great pick in rd 1, Ezra has also done well. Gladney and Dantzler were good picks and seemed to improve over the course of the season. Wonnum looks like a solid pick too. One tendency that I'd like to see Rick change is his stockpiling late round picks. I think it was especially foolish this season, knowing we'd likely have a shortened or non-existent preseason. I could see as many as 5 QBs come off the board in the first 10 picks. That speaks to a pretty flat top-tier QB group aside from Lawrence who pretty much is the Andrew Luck of this year's QB class, but even more to how so many of the teams picking in the top 10 have dire needs at QB. It's also possible we could see some trades in those first 10 picks as other teams try to move up.
What that means for the Vikings is two things:
- If they sit at #14 they are unlikely to have a shot at a top QB prospect. If one should fall, however, they're likely to get some compelling trade offers. Spielman could easily slide down 2-5 spots in round 1 while still getting a good OL/DL prospect and a 2nd rounder back, if not more.
- The choices available at #14 at positions of immediate need for the Vikings are likely to be players that present excellent value. In other words, a QB-heavy top 10 pushes other very good prospects down the board past where they would normally go. I could see the Vikings taking an excellent DE prospect like Rosseau or Paye, an excellent LB prospect like Parsons, or an excellent OL prospect like Cosmi or Slater with that #14 pick. Heck, I know it would cause howls of anguish, but even a guy like Surtain II at CB would be excellent value at #14.
If I had my choice as to what Spielman should do, especially if a QB prospect slips to #14, he should dangle that pick and trade back no more than 5 spots, get an extra 2nd and 4th for the move, and then take the best OL/DL prospect available at that slot. I'm not sold on the QBs in this draft past Lawrence, and the real value plays at both OL and DL will be around pick #20 in the first round, which are both areas the Vikings have an immediate need and can find immediate help in this upcoming draft.
