We were rumored to be very interested in G/T Ja'wuan James. However, Denver just signed him to a mega-deal and grossly overpaid. James is your classic, average offensive lineman. Some of these teams are just overpaying players out the as* right now. Especially teams like the Jets and Raiders. And history shows us, that overspending in free agency....hardly ever works. Looks good on paper, but doesnt work out very often.
Yeah, but if that's what the market dictates, then that's what the market dictates. It sucks but it's like qb where they are ridiculously overpaid. Lack of money is not an excuse to sign some of these players, it just means your salary cap is Mismanaged.
Have the Vikings signed any OL yet?

I would say given what Bryzinski has done over the years, our cap is far from mismanaged. No they just tendered Hill so far. There havent been many OL signed yet. Still quite a bit out there. We doubled our cap yesterday so I think we're sitting around $9 mill. Not counting Stephen. They could be simply holding off on OL until the draft. Who knows. I wouldnt be surprised if they sign a middling offensive lineman and then hit it hard in the draft. The FA OL class isnt the greatest. Either way, James doesnt deserve that kind of money IMO and I really dont know if that's what the market is indicating. Denver was just desperate for offensive lineman and it showed.

Didn't expect to lose both Barr and Richardson! Maybe we're going after Suh? Weird to be seeing these guys go without us signing any of the top OL.

This year we are starting to see the effects of not having much cap room.
Which makes you wonder what side of the ball will our first round pick be on.

This happens every year man. How often are we signing FAs day 1? We literally never do. I think the only one I can truly remember that was a "big name" was Linval. Outside of that, we let everyone get overpaid and wait. And as for "top OL", it's slim picking right now. This wasnt a good FA class for OL. Wouldnt mind getting someone like Paradis though.

Not necessarily. Free agency hasnt even officially started yet. We hardly ever spend big day 1. We have had plenty of cap room in the past and still dont overspend in FA and guys get ticked because we arent signing anyone. We do the same thing every year. Let everyone get overpaid first unless there is someone we TRULY want or need like Linval

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Stephen more of a NT? Or did he play next to Jospeh on a significant % of plays when he was here. I’m trying to understand if he will more or less back up Joseph or start next to him
If just a backup it will be interesting to see who gets most of the snaps next to Joseph. Holmes? JJ? Or maybe they can draft someone or bring back Tom Johnson for 1 more year

Exactly! Just look at Ricky overpaying for Bradford and Cousins.

Eagles and Rams to name two teams that spent heavily in FA the year they had it to the Superbowl. Our best shot at Superbowl came when we spent heavily with Hutch, Winfield, Allen, Lever, Favre. Truth is balance is needed between draft and FA.

To be honest, I'm not sure what the plan for this team has been. We knew last year that Barr wanted out at the combine and nothing was put in place for his departure. We knew we had Rich on a 1 year deal and nothing was put in place for his departure (maybe Holmes in the 4). Like, What are we doing? We seem reactionary and not proactively building this roster. All this in the same off season that Berger retired and nothing was done about it.

The Eagles and Rams signed guys to 1 year prove it deals. Not long term contracts. Suh, Warmack, Shields, Jeffery, etc. Getting guys as one year rentals vs being on the hook for 5 years are two completely different things. Right now, there arent 1 year contracts being dished out. These are long term deals. And the more that you see that happen, the more of a mistake it is. The Bucs and Dolphins were two primary examples of it. Bucs have the worst cap space in the league right now, and they still blow. Miami had to cut half their roster to have any money left. And guess what, all were free agent signings. Trying to trade Quinn, cutting Branch, Larsen, Amendola, etc.
As for us, lets be honest, Favre was the biggest reason we got to where we did. You take Favre off that team, we're in the dumpster.

Vikings re-signed LB Anthony Barr.
Barr was reportedly heading to the Jets, but he has had a change of heart. The Vikings are short on cap space, but they have clearly come up with the money to keep their biggest free agent in the fold. The Jets will now have to go back to the drawing board at pass rusher, where they were expected to use Barr.
Woah.....this was unexpected. I'm fine with it though. One less hole
