I also like Gabe Jackson. If we don't land any of those three, I still kind of like Cyril Richardson in the fourth.

Also, Munnerlyn is mostly considered to be a slot safety (and a good one at that) and with our history of injuries to the secondary setting us back because of lack of depth, I coudln't imagine us not taking at least 1 CB in the draft. Like I said before, Im still betting on 2. And maybe a Safety.

I have a feeling that's pretty much Zimmer's thinking also.

I doubt it. I think that they think they can pretty much get by as is and draft that guard at a later rnd, 3rd at the earliest.

If he comes here he can bulk up while Cassel starts for a year.

I wonder where Zimmer's staff has him rated on their board. I'm guessing it's not that high and they would take a defensive player first?

I'm kind of hoping that Norv is the man who makes any QB draft decisions this year. Do you think that's too much to hope for?

It's an interesting dynamic, with a lot of potential for conflict when it gets down to crunch time. The head coach is a defensive expert taking over a team that had a dreadful defense last year and is badly in need of talent. But QB is arguably the biggest position of need on this team and we have a brand new offensive coordinator who knows more than a little about quarterbacks. But, we all know who's ultimately in charge of the draft and it will be his final decision.

I've had a sniffing suspicion the past few days about A.J. McCarron, and this is what came up on top of the page on a basic Google search: Vikings draft

Are the Minnesota Vikings looking at drafting A.J. McCarron this May? That’s certainly the question Vikings fans have after hearing that general manager Rick Spielman and new head coach Mike Zimmer paid special attention to McCarron at Alabama’s pro day.

According to Chris Tomasson, the Vikings evaluated McCarron this week, but didn’t give any further details on the extent of their interest.

The only problem (well, hardly the only one) with a mid-round developmental QB is that he may not see the field at all this year and you go into next year's off season and draft wondering what exactly you have. But... it's better than reaching if that franchise QB isn't there at #8, and it's better than going another year of not drafting a QB any higher than the 7th round.

The more I think about it, the more I think they'll be looking to draft a QB either with their #40 pick in the 2nd round, or they'll try to move back into the 1st round to take a QB. A reach in that position isn't as inexcusable as blowing a top 10 pick, and desperate times call for desperate measures.

Don't read too much into pro day visits, or players they we bring in for visits. Showing up in full force could to be look at a number of players. Maybe they want people to notice that they're all there because they want teams thinking they're targeting McCarron. History has shown that paying attention to these types of things can be deceptive.

And if they were there primarily to check out C.J. Mosley as a possible first round choice, why _not_ also take a good look at McCarron? You don't often assemble the organization's braintrust to scope out a 3rd or 4th round draft prospect.

Agree with the deception part. Even though I don't put more than 50/50 stock in this one, I think they are probably looking, but I also think it depends how the draft plays out.

I also think we could get him in the 3rd round, especially if the Raiders pick a QB before then. That's the major key, IF they are seriously looking at him.

Purplemania wrote:We definitely need to trade down if possible. Right now, I actually have changed my mind about drafting a QB #8 overall. The fact that McCarron (not a big fan, but who knows), Mettenberger (Rivers 2.0??), Garapollowhatever, and other decent tier QB will still be available rounds 2-4, I'd much rather trade down or select a defensive player at 8.

I've changed my mind, also. If Zimmer is willing to take Mosely, or someone very close to his abilities, then I'm for trading down, but no lower than with the Giants at #12. That would give us two #3's and probably a secong 4th. That would be very good.

Not bad, but I don't think anyone is willing to move up 2-3 spots just go guarantee their guy when the draft is so deep. Best case scenario is Bridgewater or Bortle falls and we trade our spot for a mini ransom of picks.

I'm really warming up to Mosley, although I prefer to pick the genetic freaks Gilbert or Robinson (if he's there).

I brought up the Giants because they need one of the top 2-3 LT, and they will be gone at the 12th spot, in all likelyhood. They get their LT, and we still get Mosley.

In all reality, Zimmer and co have 3-4 realistic scenarios revolving around the QB's, what ever their angle/thinking may be. My thinking above is just one of those, I hope.

If Bridgewater or Bortles fell, I would think the Bucs would be doing everything they could the pick ahead of us to move back. After the Vikings pick, there aren't a lot of QB needy teams for quite a few picks.
