The chances of getting 1 guy to create a huge impact on your starting 5 is quite good in the NBA, which is why more GMs and fans are ok with flat out losin over mediocrity now.
It's a bit different, yes, but the NBA also has the lottery so you have a harder time guaranteeing the top 1/2 pick in the NBA than the NFL.

Maybe, but I could potentially be ok with Parker or some of the other guys too. I guess we'll have to see if those guys are as good as advertised in their single college season.

IMHO, continuing to start Ponder gives the Vikings the best chance of actually going 0-16.

The QB position is critical....but franchise guys are few. #1 overall picks don't guarantee success.

Regardless, you need a full team of guys to win a superbowl. There has been only 1 team in the history of the league to win it all with the philosophy of 'defense be dammed, we're just gonna outscore you with our amazing QB'.

Even the current Broncos have built their team around a butt kicking D. They jumped at the opportunity to get the elite QB, and he signed because of how good a team they already had. They didn't have to suck or tank games. They just built a solid team and hired a very good coaching staff to run it.
I agree with you to a point, but what the Broncos did is what the Vikings have done. It never gave us a championship, the jury is still out on if it will do it for Denver. I am goint to say it is unlikely, because Manning is the greatest regular season QB in NFL history, playoffs not so much.

I know most of the great passers are not number 1 overall types, Brees 2nd round (I was screaming at my TV in 03 for the Vikings to select him btw), Brady 6th round (very rare to pull that off), Rogers 31st pick. The biggest thing that has lead us here, is ignoring the position for the most part. Even when you think you have a guy, draft another, it is too important to not do that. And if anything you have a good backup for 3 years and a trade chip. At the very least you need a quality backup in this league, they do not have one quality QB on the roster, MBT who knows, but I doubt it.

There still are Super Bowl winning guys who were taken high as well, Eli, Ben most notable. The logic that a team has many more problems is always valid. But the QB spot has the greatest longevity, and you have the time to fix those issues once you have that most vital piece in place. I don't trust Speilman here to take the right guy later on, he needs to have the no brainer pick in his face. I do wish they had the scouting to get Russel Wilson, Collin Kaepernik types, but I vote no confidence. And this team will never be serious until this is addressed. Is there anyone here who could with a straight face say, that this team was a contender in 2012? They were cannon fodder in the playoffs, nothing more. And we know why.

I agree with you about the Broncos and not annointing them. From what I've seen the Chiefs are better on defense and have a more balanced offense. Still way early.

I agree to a large degree about Spielman and QBs....O-linemen as well. Not sure I beieve he can find the diamond in the rough type guy. No brainers are no brainers...but there aren't as many of those as we'd like to believe either.

You really need a franchise QB. And to me that implies a guy who understands the sytem and can run it well. Knows what he can and can't do and is comfortable managing a game or putting the team on his back. A leader.

I don't think it's uber important when that guy arrives. Meaning, if you stick to your guns as a GM and consistently fill holes, without reaching, to build a solid team on both sidesof the ball....with specific attention to the trenches, a QB can be there at year 1 or year 3. He can be drafted or fall into your lap ala Brees in NO...or Smith in KC.
I'd prefer to have them succeed through the draft.....but, like you, I question a lot of their evaluating outside of rd 1.
