BFD. First time the Vikings have had a capable backup in a while. Maybe (just maybe) the Vikings are starting to wise up and realize the importance of the guy playing behind center. They went 10-6 last year. Losing their starting QB should NOT be a reason for the season to be over. And maybe they actually want someone who could push Ponder and even come in and take over if the kid flails.

The only issue I have is...WHY $4 MILLION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????????????? The guy should've been sign half that! That brings out freed cap down to what...$16 mill now? If we sign Jennings for 10-11 mill, that's only 4 more mills remaining.

my understanding is that it was 4 million for 2 years.

2 million a year.

That doesn't seem that bad

A couple of things here. 1st off his salary is not that much compared to the rest of the league's back ups. More importantly your saying that if a starting QB gets hurt and goes down then the team's season is automatically over :?: Many backup quarterbacks have stepped in, over the years and led their teams into the play-offs. In fact that is how sometimes the back-up unseats the incumbant se (Kapernik/Smith, Brady Bledsoe etc). I think that Spielman learned a very hard lesson with the way Webb performed in the play-off game and kudos to him for trying to improve the backup position.

exactly, put in a just barely competent QB instead of Webb and we would have realistically been playing in SF

Probably a bit unfair but he did really struggle this past season on a miserable team.

I agree that he's probably the best option available as a backup. I'm actually pretty pleased with the signing. With less pressure on him - if he does have to come in - he may actually flash some form closer to what he showed in NE and in 2010 with Charlie Weiss as his OC.

But I'd say he absolutely comes here as the backup, no matter what ESPN and other media idiots try to stir up. Spielman has said that Ponder is the guy going into 2013. And that's what they need to say and follow through on for Ponder's confidence. If they want him to have the best opportunity to be successful, he doesn't need to be looking over his shoulder.

It HAS to be Ponder's job until he plays his way out of it. I don't care if Cassel has a QB rating of 150 during the preseason and looks like Tom Brady. Ponder starts the season #1.
Cassel just never got a fair shot at the job here in kc. The coaches didnt care about him the minute pioli traded for him. Ive been following Matt since his days at Chatsworth High school and hes got what it takes to be great in the NFL. Once he wins the starting job in minnesota and all the minnesota fans and coaches get behind his talents he will shine. I cant wait to see what he can do with Adrian Peterson!

Really. He had 47 starts.
hes got what it takes to be great in the NFL.
57 turnovers in 47 starts (30 in the last 28). Not a great arm. Career completion % under 60% What does he have? Perhaps some intangibles?

If you're expecting Cassel to A) Enter a QB competition and B) win that competition you're going to be awfully disappointed.

But, you know, welcome!

those stats just dont show the true matt cassel. Hes had so many offensive coordinators I cant even remember them all in KC. Hes had to learn and relearn play books every year. The KC coaching staff was also having him call the worst plays for him to throw. Once Bill Musgrave gets ahold of him and Cassel learns his system, he'll be able to make all the throws. You guys should definitely go offensive line heavy in this coming draft to make sure your line is strong. Once matt gets a good line he can really play well. Look what he did in New England!

Hes a backup QB, thats taking the place of Webb. Yes, he is the answer to that. Did we overpay? Thats another question. But we finally filled a big hole I didnt think we would.

bowe is way over rated he drops every meaningful pass. They should of let him walk in free agency. Mccluster is 140 pounds wet and is horrible. Charles is the only good one. Moeaki isnt anything special either. the OL was horrible also.
If you guys get a solid strong OL cassel can really light up the score board with AP behind him.

Even as a Ponder supporter I am open minded enough to say that if Cassel shows up in camp and in practice and is head and shoulders better than Ponder I would fully support the idea of him as the starter.
Don't fool your self there were many fans on this board clamouring to get Cassel and lambasting the fact that the Vikes did not get him. Of course many of those fans are the same ones that complain about almost every free agent that is available and the Vikings do not sign them
One other thing, for my sake and probably for the sake of the board, hopefully we will not be getting a million posts from you about how great Cassel is and should start etc. etc We already have a poster here that made a similar number of posts singing the praises of Tebow.

I wont, I just think given the opportunity and support Cassel could really be good in the NFL. Hes never been given the chance and support of his teammates and fans. If you vikings fans really get behind him and Musgrave develops a good offensive gameplan with short passes and dumpoffs, and you guys have a really strong almost Hall of Fame offensive line, then you could maybe possibily win 6 games with cassel starting!
