In fact that is how sometimes the back-up unseats the incumbant (see Brady Bledsoe). I think that Spielman learned a very hard lesson with the way Webb performed in the play-off game and kudos to him for trying to improve the backup position.

I agree that he's probably the best option available as a backup. I'm actually pretty pleased with the signing. With less pressure on him - if he does have to come in - he may actually flash some form closer to what he showed in NE and in 2010 with Charlie Weiss as his OC.

But I'd say he absolutely comes here as the backup, no matter what ESPN and other media idiots try to stir up. Spielman has said that Ponder is the guy going into 2013. And that's what they need to say and follow through on for Ponder's confidence. If they want him to have the best opportunity to be successful, he doesn't need to be looking over his shoulder.

It HAS to be Ponder's job until he plays his way out of it. I don't care if Cassel has a QB rating of 150 during the preseason and looks like Tom Brady. Ponder starts the season #1.

If you're expecting Cassel to A) Enter a QB competition and B) win that competition you're going to be awfully disappointed.

Don't fool your self there were many fans on this board clamouring to get Cassel and lambasting the fact that the Vikes did not get him. Of course many of those fans are the same ones that complain about almost every free agent that is available and the Vikings do not sign them
One other thing, for my sake and probably for the sake of the board, hopefully we will not be getting a million posts from you about how great Cassel is and should start etc. etc We already have a poster here that made a similar number of posts singing the praises of Tebow.
