Ertz would have cost at least a 2nd round pick.
My speculation is a third round pick at the most. We possibly could have had him for the same price as Herndon, but opted for Herndon feeling that Ertz is washed up.
I tend to think a 2nd would be closer, especially considering that we gave up a 4 for an unproven Herndon.

News just broken that Irv is likely out for the season. I mean that doesn't surprise me, but that really sucks. Sigh.

Yeah. The Eagles are perfectly content to keep Ertz on the roster this season and give their young QB a viable weapon to throw too. This isn't like the Bradford trade where we did the Eagles a favor by trading for Bradford who they didn't want to start anyway.
You think about it, we saved them 11 million in cap for a guy they didn't want, and they still asked for a 1st round pick. It wasn't going to be any different with Ertz who will actually contribute this year.

2nd round pick for an overpaid washed up TE will never happen.

I went to the NY Post. They called Herndon disappointing. The fan comments were good riddance and they fleeced the Queens.
Herndon has been inconsistent and has had some off-field issues, but he has talent and has been productive for stretches. The NY fans likely expected to see that higher level of consistent production from him, thus their opinions about the trade.
While he's not going to be a star, he strikes me as a guy who has more upside potential if he can get his act together.

You have to take comments from fans for the other team with a gain of salt but it sure feels like we overpaid. Regardless, we don't need a superstar with Cook, Jefferson and Thielen in front of him, so if we get solid production, that is probably good enough. He has potential, I agree.
I don't have a great feeling about this offense in general this year, and I sure hope I'm wrong. I hope the D can carry the team until the O can figure out some things, because the vibe from camp and preseason has not been good so far.

I never thought a 1st round pick for an overpaid, never-was QB would happen either.
Since he is still on the Eagles, you are probably right about it never happening though. They want more than the league wants to give up, so he remains an Eagle.

Sam Bradford was the #1 pick in the NFL draft. Still young and showing lots of promise. Didn't we win the first 5 games he played for us? Maybe I'm remembering wrong. If Bradford had ever stayed healthy he would have consistently been a pro bowl QB. A first round pick for him was within reason. If the Vikings had of wanted Ertz they would have given a 3rd round pick for him and the Eagles would have gladly accepted. We are both speculating and neither of us can prove anything.

Herndon is also comparatively slow. Irv Smith Jr. 40 is 4.63 per draftscout. Herndon is 4.78.

The preseason was pretty bad on offense, but I keep telling myself Jefferson wasn't out there, Thielen wasn't out there, Cook wasn't out there, and the OL has some new players who will still need time to jell.
But like you I don't get a good vibe from the starting offense.

He was going into his 7th season in the NFL, statistically was the worst starting QB of the 2010's, he had already been traded once (for less than a 1st) was coming off a really bad year, and the team he was currently on had just given up the farm to move on from him. The Eagles didn't want him and the Vikings taking on the 11 million guaranteed that was still left on his contract gave the Eagles enough cap to sign Alshon Jeffrey who would go on to put 85 yards and 2 TDs on us in the NFCCG and giving them the 1st round pick that would be used draft a DE who would strip sack our QB in that same NFCCG was the greatest thing to ever happen to that franchise. We did not win the first 5 games he played for us btw, the backup who had better career stats than the guy we gave up a 1st for won the first of those 5 games.
It amazes me people still defend that trade. "Consistently a pro bowl QB". Let's see some numbers to back that up.
