Yes, Webb has *some* skills. Does he have the hands and instincts to be a receiver? Let's hope so.jackal wrote:I have seen the videos of Patterson..

Patterson is already an excellent returner and Webb probably won't make the roster as a backup returner and/or #6 WR.

Re: The Webb experiment is finally over!
Before we all cut Webb, let's see how he actually does in a game as a full time WR. If he can catch the ball, he is one of those players that is very dangerous once he has it.
Vikings fan since Nov. 6, 1966. Annoying Packer fans since Nov. 7, 1966
Re: The Webb experiment is finally over!
its not that i am against Patterson returning kicks, but I think Patterson, Wright, Jennings and Simpson should spend as much time
as possible running routes and catching balls with Ponder ..
Adrian can't have that season forever..

And that would be a big plus. Jennings, Wright, Patterson, and Simpson all run well after a catch. Webb would add extra ammunition in that department.
Maybe it's no accident that the Vikings are building a WR corps that can get YAC. It probably says something about the style of WCO passing game they intend to use.

Oh, I agree. But there are some, like PH, where the return game was natural and took very little practice. I believe Patterson is like that. But our passing game is going to need more work then the return game.jackal wrote:its not that i am against Patterson returning kicks, but I think Patterson, Wright, Jennings and Simpson should spend as much time

Or the quarterback they are stuck with.Maybe it's no accident that the Vikings are building a WR corps that can get YAC. It probably says something about the style of WCO passing game they intend to use.

Well........they say its good to build around your quarterbacks strengths. Ponder and Harvin seem to gel really good. So imagine the passing game will be better with more WR who can get YAC as well.Demi wrote: Or the quarterback they are stuck with.
Re: The Webb experiment is finally over!
I'm sure it has nothing to do with a philosophy regarding what sort of players they want at the position. After all, it's not as if receivers who can run well after the catch have long been an important ingredient in the west coast offense...Demi wrote: Or the quarterback they are stuck with.
Back to the QB making the position change: I'll be glad when the Webb experiment IS finally over. Webb is one of those players who has received an amount of attention disproportionate to his relatively minimal contributions over the years. He's supposedly been the Vikes great, under-utilized secret weapon since he was drafted. Hopefully this move will finally reveal if that's true or not.

I'm not sure I agree.losperros wrote: And that would be a big plus. Jennings, Wright, Patterson, and Simpson all run well after a catch. Webb would add extra ammunition in that department.

Cordarrelle Patterson I'll grant you. At least, that's what the Vikings are hoping.
Greg Jennings has no special YAC ability. No more so than any other good receiver who gets open consistently. They'll often find themselves in space after a catch and will avoid tacklers and sometimes look good doing so, but there's nothing special there.
Jerome Simpson hurdles people. He has serious hops, and that's his claim to fame. Definitely some untapped potential there, but he needs to show up first.
Jarius Wright is just a guy. Vikings fans seem to think he's going to become another Percy Harvin, because they look similar when they put a helmet on. Doesn't work that way.
We've seen Joe Webb run from the QB position, but that's a completely different animal from running after the catch as a WR.
(BTW, I just watched a Greg Jennings highlight video on YouTube. I sure hope the Minnesota QB doesn't have to play as big a part in his success as the Green Bay QB did. Perfectly placed outside should balls, dead-on in-stride 40 yard strikes, perfectly threaded passes thrown on a rope between defenders. I have a feeling that we're all in for a letdown that has nothing to do with how good Jennings himself is.)

Route running and timing of course, never have been.I'm sure it has nothing to do with a philosophy regarding what sort of players they want at the position. After all, it's not as if receivers who can run well after the catch have long been an important ingredient in the west coast offense...

Re: The Webb experiment is finally over!
I have long said Aaron Roger's isn't the end all be all in QB position (waits for GB fans to fame....). It's the belief that AR makes stars out of mediocre receivers... it's absolute BS. While Jennings may be a let down it isn't because AR >>>>>>>> CP. It's the system they work in. Routes and timings as critical to those types of passes I seen Ponder do the same type of passes with Jarius Write and Percy. He has a huge tendency to undershoot receivers on routes which is a INT waiting to happen unfortunately. After another year off I wont put it past him to make more critical throws but I'm not expecting Jennings to be utilized to his full potential either but be damned if I let someone sit there and wax Roger's greatness.Eli wrote:

Re: The Webb experiment is finally over!
And I disagree with you, given the history of the WRs in question. Please consider the following...Eli wrote:I'm not sure I agree.

Jennings is already known as running well after the catch. He probably has no more than above average speed but he's capable of gaining extra yardage with moves and smarts after he catches the ball. It's not like this hasn't been talked about before regarding Jennings. It's part of his arsenal. He's not just a short yardage possession guy. On that note, in 2011 Jennings was ranked #5 in the NFL among WRs getting YAC. FWIW, Harvin was #2.
Simpson's speed is grossly underrated. You know why? Because he ran a 4.47/40 for the combine, as if that's slow. Yeah, right. Never mind the 4.41/40 that he ran at his pro day, which is constantly conveniently overlooked. Simpson runs very well after a catch, particularly on slants and quick hits. My concern regarding Simpson is technique, as in running disciplined routes, and his occasional lapses in concentration. He definitely needs to play more focused football.
Jarius Wright was excellent at gaining YAC for the Razorbacks. What, he's now suddenly forgotten how to kick in the 4.3/40 speed after a catch? I don't buy it.
You already know that Patterson is a demon with the ball in his hands.
Just my two cents here, Eli, but I stand by my original point. The Vikings have purposely populated their WR corps with YAC guys. I believe that tells us something about the passing attack that we will be seeing from the team this upcoming season.

Jennings is perfectly capable of making difficult catches so while Rodgers' accuracy undoubtedly made his job easier, that kind of accuracy isn't essential to his success.
