I'm not trying to be negative but more realistic. I hope Childs will recover and be a great player but it's going to be tough considering BOTH knees were shredded apart.

vikeinmontana wrote:yikes. you can tell it's the off season! can just be brutal on these boards at this time. i swear sometimes you are almost scared to say anything positive about a player for fear of the backlash!

i for one am pulling for childs. i'm sure some just read that sentence and came away thinking that i believe that childs is the second coming of jerry rice and if can only get healthy he'll take us to the promised land. but for everyone else i'm sure they get it. he was drafted by the vikings and i'm a vikings fan. with very few exceptions if you play for the vikings i'm going to root for you. as a former college player myself i know all too well that injuries can crush careers. i also know that fans can just be brutal. like if you are not a first ballot hall of fame caliber player then you are "worthless" and a "waste of space" and we should "just get rid of him" because he'll "never amount to anything". it's silly. i really don't think many people have any idea how hard you have to work and how talented you need to be to even get a sniff from the nfl. so when i see a guy on the vikings who has had two devastating injuries i'm going to root for him 110% and i guess just accept the consequences from message board experts on why my way of thinking is so wrong.

one last thing. if you do a little googling searching you will see that childs was in fact a high wr prospect after his sophmore year. some draft "experts" had him as high as a 2nd round pick at that point of his career. then he suffered injuries and was never the same. however, even at that time people thought getting him in the 4th or 5th round was very little risk with potential high reward of landing a good #2 receiver on an nfl team. we all know what happened next.

personally i love this kids attitude. why wouldn't you say you're gonna be back? why wouldn't you be positive? sometimes i think many of this board have never had to face adversity so they really don't understand the power of positive thinking. setting goals, and hard work. it's way more fun to be negative, bash players, and call other fans out for even minimal optimism. to each his own.
Nice post!!!!...I played college ball many moons ago and know it is VERY tough to come back from serious injuries, be it college or pro. I hope he comes back strong and remains injury free..

I am with you too.

Again, I am pulling for the guy, but I don't understand the expectations for the guy. I don't think people realize that he has not torn his patellar tendon just one time, but he has torn it THREE times. The guy is going to be lucky to run consistently everyday for the rest of life after his recovery.

I wasn't upset with the Childs pick last year and actually welcomed it. However, after learning about his injury in training camp, I knew the guy was done. I feel for the guy, I really do because I too have battle with serve injuries all my life. Hell, my injuries and my interests in helping others with injuries helped sparked me choosing my major.

In the case of TL;DR: Childs is a brave man and I feel very bad for him. However, to expect to see him make the active roster and contribute is wishful thinking.

Thanks HardcoreVikeFan - This is what I was trying to say. We're at the point where we must draft a WR for the future. I think Jarius and Greg will do a nice job for us this year.

I agree, hopefully he can make the team next year. Don't want him to rush back just to injure himself again..

I asked Childs today if he was going to make it back this year. He looked at Jarius Wright and was all smiles and laughs, and says something like--Oh. I'm going to make it back for everything. He could have just been being goofy, but he seemed serious. He seems freakin' huge, even just sitting there. I HOPE he makes something out of his career. I wanna see what that guy can do.

Reminds me a lot of the Denario Alexander situation very bad legs. Wasn't Laurent Robinson in a similar situation too?

Childs said Dr. Boyd did something different in surgery to tighten and strengthen his knees this time. Seemed positive about his progress.

Greg Childs says he's still on track: "It's about just not rushing it"
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- As Jared Allen rehabbed his shoulder for two months in Hawaii this offseason, Minnesota Vikings' receiver Greg Childs was in snowy Minnesota, rehabbing seven days a week to recover from torn patellar tendons in both of his knees.

Childs, 23, sat out last season and said his methodical recovery process is the best medicine to remedy the Aug. 6 surgery.

"I had to let everybody know," Childs said. "I'm not just up here playing in the snow, because I don't like the cold. People are talking about Monday through Friday workouts -- I'm like, Sunday to Sunday."

Childs sat out Tuesday's organized team activity practice, as he has the entire offseason. But afterwards, he caught passes from the Vikings' quarterbacks for the first time in front of reporters.

He even had enough gas left after his post-practice session to dunk a ball over a field-goal crossbar before leaving the field.

"I've been cutting like that for a good little while now," Childs said. "I'm taking it day by day. I feel good, but at the same time, the Minnesota Vikings aren't rushing me. That's why I'm doing so well now."

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier praised Childs' work ethic, but didn't say whether or not he would be ready for training camp -- keeping with the team's guarded approach to the timeline.

"I've got my fingers crossed, hoping that'll happen, waiting on (head athletic trainer) Eric Sugarman and our medical staff to give us the green light," Frazier said. "That would be my hope. We'll see what happens. I'm not sure what direction it'll go."

Childs said he's ahead of his recovery schedule and near 100%. But he said he's not eager to put pads on, because he already knows what he can do.

"It hasn't even been a year yet since I got hurt," Childs said. "It's just about not rushing it, not getting too excited because I can do all these things. They've been telling me to pump the breaks, stick to the schedule. No sense in breaking it now."

I have been adamant that he will never play again. Now I'm getting the feeling that he is going to prove me wrong. What a story this will be if he not only makes it back to the field but actually meets his potential as a wideout. Definitely easy to root for this kid.

It's going to be interesting to see how much practice time he gets during training camp. My gut feeling is that he'll end up on the PUP list and will get activated sometime mid-season, which I think is more than we could have asked for with Childs for this season.
