VikingLord wrote:Hunter had a much higher YPC than Allen in every season. Allen is more of a Cris Carter-type WR than a guy who is going to stretch the field consistently. It might be true that Allen puts up a 40 time in the range of Hunter (I doubt it), but even if he does, stretching the field is not his game (at least, not in college). He's a possession-type receiver with some YAC ability.
As I said, it really depends on what the Vikings want. There's been a lot of discussion around here about whether they need a speedy "stretch the field" receiver or a possession receiver. I think they need outside help badly enough that the exact nature of that help is less important. They could use a really good possession receiver and a tall WR that can stretch the field. I think Unter ddoes the latter better but I don't necessarily think that makes him a better choice for the Vikings.
What about Allen suggests he has upside?
His size, route-running skills, RAC ability, hands, ability to go up and get the ball ... just about every positive aspect of his game suggests upside to me. He's been a good, productive college player but there's still room for improvement in his game so I don't think he's peaked in terms of what he can bring to the position.
The one thing I like about Allen is his route-running. He's a precise route runner and he's a guy who is capable of going up and getting contested balls. One thing I didn't see a lot of in his highlights, however, is him clearly beating coverage. His YPC numbers indicate that - he can make those catches and get open enough to receive them, but his defender is likely to be there to drop him fairly quickly. I do not see Allen as the type of receiver that is going to really help a QB like Ponder who already hesitates to throw the ball unless his target is clearly open.
Ponder looked like he was past that issue during the last month of the season so I don't think it's a big concern going forward, certainly not one that should influence who the Vikes select in the draft.

I said it before and I'll say it again: I like both players. I'm just not sure I see Hunter as a first round prospect.

Poor Michael Jenkins. He was probably so excited to have a thread about himself, but it got derailed to other WRs that aren't even drafted yet
