This is but a partial list, I am sure there are some I missed.

I don't dig when people are asked to list their favorite movies in order to be judged by their preferences. We all watch movies for different reasons, and even those reasons change from day to day. One day I may be interested in seeing a well-crafted, technically brilliant movie, while the next day I want to see an intimate character study. Some days I am all about escapism and simple, slam-bang action, and other days I want to delve into something deeper.

Frankly, we all have films which we are proud to say we love, and others that we do love, but may not be eager to share with others. For example, I love the movie Sixteen Candles. I just do. I'm not proud of it, but there it is. And I thought Click was a good movie, and laughed heartily watching Billy Madison. Not exactly the pinnacle of filmmaking, but I liked them.

I can usually tell a lot from a moviegoer by how well they like or dislike Ridley Scott films like Alien, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and Blade Runner. Peter Weir films like Master and Commander, Witness, and Gallipoli are similar.

I know friends and family that would fall asleep trying to watch many of those films. They want action or comedy at all times. That is fine for them, but I wouldn't take their film reviews seriously. I mean, Wild Hogs was fine, but it wouldn't win any awards in my book.

But is it all about winning awards?? Who cares if Wild Hogs would sit well or not with the "intellectuals" who over analyze movies. Wild Hogs is a great movie to take the family to. Its fun, its funny, it has a decent plot, tells a good story and even has a few lessons in it. We went to it as a family. My wife, 3 children and I all had a great time. IMO it was an award winning movie for its niche. Its not all about being cerebral....thats just a niche too, unfortunately thats pretty much the niche that gets the awards.

The one thing it is ok to judge by looking at movies is whether you would agree with that person's critique of a movie or not. If I talk with someone who I know loves movies that I do not care for, I have different expectations of their opinion of any movie than if I am talking to someone with whom I agree often on movies. That doesn't seem unreasonable.

There aren't awards given to movies just for being fun. No more so than we send football players to the Hall of Fame for being nice or personable. It has to do with technical achievements, technique, craftmanship. Not to say a movie cannot be fun and well crafted. I liked Cinderella Man because it was well-crafted and a joy to watch. I loved Batman Begins but do I think it s award-worthy? Not outside of technical achievement, IMO.

You are splitting hairs IMO.
Do we not give an award to for the best comedy of the year? Then why not an award for the best family film? I guess maybe for many films the "award " lies not in a shiny piece of metal given by many who IMO think they are smarter than they are but by the fact that tens of millions of people love the film and that it makes hundreds of millions of dollars.

Well believe it or not, there is a difference between good, intelligent made films than well... the other stuff that is shiite.
