Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
well then how are coordinators supposed to get a chance then? you don't just plop down out of the sky and become an nfl head coach someone needs to give you a chance to get experience. that is the problem with this economy as well; everyone wants someone "experienced" but nobody wants to give someone with less experience a try. zimmer has paid his dues he has been in the league a long time.
Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
Like anything else, you interview the person, get a feel for his leadership qualities, how he does things, what his personal philosophy on coaching is. Then you take a stab. (So far, Zygi's stabs at this have been whiffs. Hopefully, Spielman will do better.) You don't just hire someone to see whether or not they'll work out. Most coordinators will not get a chance at head coaching, and that's probably the way it should be.mosscarter wrote:well then how are coordinators supposed to get a chance then? you don't just plop down out of the sky and become an nfl head coach someone needs to give you a chance to get experience. that is the problem with this economy as well; everyone wants someone "experienced" but nobody wants to give someone with less experience a try. zimmer has paid his dues he has been in the league a long time.
Same with hiring anyone with minimal or inadequate experience. You can interview them, but 9 times out of 10 they're not going to impress you enough to overcome that obstacle. In another interview, for another company, with another manager, the story may be different.

Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
i'm not sure its possible to interview more candidates than they are. the slate is full this week but someone will snatch up either gruden or zimmer. dungy, tomlin, wade phillips were all coordinators and that is just a few off the top of my head.
Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
Thanks for the perspective, PurpleHalo and dead_poet, thanks for the link. Zimmer's definitely a fiery coach and maybe that volatility is one of the reasons he hasn't been a head coach yet or maybe it just wasn't a role he wanted until the last few years. He's had some interviews for NFL head coaching positions and hasn't been hired yet but that doesn't mean anything in terms of his qualifications.PurpleHalo wrote:Zimmer is a fiery guy, he isn't the type to tow the company line. That probably has a lot to do with it. Go on youtube, there is a 24 second clip of him talking to his defense on the sidelines. Bill Parcells with a dirty mouth!
You do have to be careful hiring a guy like that, there may be meltdowns, and he probably will flip his lid if the team is doing badly. A little like Mike Ditka maybe in that area.
I would love Zimmer tho, he is the exact opposite of what we have had here. I would just hope that if the antics got too much, NFL players will tune you out.

Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
I feel the exact same way, Moth. The other side of me says hopefully he's that kind of guy who doesn't light it up in the interviews and doesn't take the hob knob route, but is instead more of the guy that doesn't do his best on articulating the how's, rather, he just gets it done when he's coaching.Mothman wrote:I worry that Zimmer could be one of those long-time coordinators who's best in that position and not as a head coach. It's a somewhat baseless fear because I can't point to anything about him that suggests that will be the case. It just concerns me that he's been coaching so long and has never been a head coach at any level.
Maybe he'd be great...

Heres one other thing I have heard, not sure it's true or not, Zimmer wants complete control of the football operations. To me that sounds like he wants final draft say as well, the way the organization is set up I doubt they would allow that. He also is building a big ranch in Kentucky, which points at the Tennessee job being more suitable. And his wife died about 6 months ago as well, so he has hid kids.Mothman wrote: Thanks for the perspective, PurpleHalo and dead_poet, thanks for the link. Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
This team needs a Zimmer. He is the Anti-Fraizer in my mind. I like a HC that doesn't stand there like a dummy and repeat the same things, game after game. It doesn't matter if the players like him, but they better respect him. Plus, I bet he doesn't stand there and take it when Spielman tries to put all the blame on him, if we have tough times ahead. I also like Roman and Horton as HC prospects.
Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
I think you're confusing that little coaching tirade on tape with press conferences. Virtually every head coach sounds repetitive and at least a little stupid when they have to stand in front of a room full of reporters after every single game and answer the same dumb questions that are asked of them every week. You don't know what Frazier ever said behind closed doors in the locker room or during the week on the practice field.PurpleKoolaid wrote:This team needs a Zimmer. He is the Anti-Fraizer in my mind. That said, I have no doubt that their personalities are just about 180 degrees apart, and maybe that is what this team needs.

I'm not getting my hopes up with Zimmer, I have a feeling he's gonna go somewhere else.
Re: 2014 Current and Potential Coaches
The Bears seem to have started a trend with their strategy to interview a dozen candidates. They hired Trestman on Jan. 16, 2012. Vikes are on track to top them on candidates interviewed. What's the over/under on Spielman making his hire by Jan. 17? (an infamous day in Vikings history)

He claims that he will hire a new HC by the Super Bowl and I believe him.CalVike wrote:The Bears seem to have started a trend with their strategy to interview a dozen candidates. Vikings will reportedly request to interview 49ers DL coach Jim Tomsula, per Adam Caplan on Twitter.
