Christian Ponder, Vikings ready to go deep in 2013

When it comes to going deep, the Vikings are relying on a return to health by Jerome Simpson, plus raw first-round pick Cordarrelle Patterson and second-year pro Jarius Wright to give them what Bernard Berrian, Randy Moss, Devin Aromashodu, and a hobbled Simpson couldn't the past three years.

"We know that Cordarrelle can run by you. We know that Jerome can run by you," Frazier said. "We have some deep threats. Now, it's a matter of our being able to connect on some of those."

Coaches spent time in the offseason studying other teams' "go" balls, which were a particular point of frustration last season. Among other changes, receivers now have more freedom in how they release at the line of scrimmage, treating each situation as a one-on-one with a single assignment: Beat your man.

But it's up to Ponder, 25, to give them a chance.

Sure, it will be great if the "team" delivers and Ponder pulls his weight, but should he lack in production, there is Cassel, and Cassel is a good quarterback. He had a bad year as the KC "team" had a bad year. When he was with New England he and the team together had a great year. Should Cassel get in for a series, which in turn, turns into a series of games, don't think the Vikes are doomed. The team can deliver with the right core of receivers. Regardless, Ponder has first crack at moving the team down field. As much as many Viking nuts may believe, Peterson can't do it all!

Addendum: "Nuts" in this context means "fans."

The Vikings found everything they were looking for and more in a backup quarterback. Maybe too much more.

Matt Cassel brings solid credentials to our humble tundra. He's had several outstanding seasons and still is just 30 years old.

Cassel has certainly played well at times in the past but I have no more confidence in him than I do in Ponder and unlike Ponder, Cassel's been around for years and had ample opportunity to "find his level" as an NFL QB. That doesn't mean he can't still get better but he hasn't looked like a good QB the last two years.

plus he has had dwanye bowe to throw to and still could only scrap together one good season. im not confident in his abilities whatsoever

I'm sure all Viking fans hope to "not" have to find out if Cassel can move the team down field, because if he plays, that means something happened to Ponder. Those who constantly badmouth the Vikings backup quarterback are only looking to the Chiefs terrible "team" effort, of which he was a major part. You should hope that the good Patriot sparks shine if he gets on the field, instead of thinking/believing that he flat out sucks. He's an NFL caliber quarterback or else he wouldn't be on a team. Like any bench player in the NBA, there's a reason he's still in the NBA, and that's because he can play and has talent, (excluding Shawn Bradley).

Addendum: I do have to admit I have bashed Ponder myself, but after defending him for the beginning of last season. I'm not immune to appearing to have double standards. My point is this; why should stating that the Vikes are in major trouble should Ponder go down? If the team is still playing well, a decent qb could very likely still drive the team. The Vikings were good last year, and improving this year. No matter the quarterback, a winning team "should" continue, but then again, nobody knows anything about a team until at least 4-6 games into a new season.

More likely, judging by all the offseason comments, because something did NOT happen to Ponder. Because he didn't take that "next step", didn't transform himself from a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly. Ponder getting hurt is that least of the Vikings' worries. That would be infinitely better than coming to the undeniable conclusion that Ponder is a bust and having to start all over again at QB.

Gonna be an interesting season.

He actually had a strong season for the Chiefs in 2010 so it's not even as simple as saying he was good with the Pats and bad in KC. It's just that he hasn't been very good the last two years.

That's true and as backups go, he looks like a sound choice. He's definitely an NFL caliber quarterback.
