ESPN's Todd McShay ranked Virginia S Anthony Harris as the best prospect who didn't get drafted.
"Harris is a ball hawk at the free safety position, displaying a natural feel for playing in space and big-time playmaking instincts," McShay wrote. "He's solid in coverage but has limitations, as his narrow frame is an issue against bigger wide receivers and tight ends, and he lacks the ideal agility to stick with slot receivers." Harris tumbled down boards due to a series of unfortunate events. Harris missed the Senior Bowl and his pro day while recovering from shoulder surgery, never really getting a chance to impress evaluators this winter. Harris recorded at least 80 tackles in three straight years and led the country with eight interceptions in 2013. He signed with the Vikings on Saturday and has a real chance of sticking on Minnesota's roster.
I was really surprised that Harris wasn't drafted. But it's very encouraging that he's being looked at as the best player that went undrafted!!

At what point does one decide between a football player and an athlete? There is a major distinction between the two types of players. At the end of the day, you could have the greatest coaching staff in the world and a roster full of athlete freaks and still not be successful.

There has to be a point where there needs to a decision that chooses a football player rather than an athlete. While I like having athletic players on the team, I will be extremely disappointed if this team passed on football players to add athletes instead.
I think the end result is what really counts and as Kurtis (saint33) said, the two aren't mutually exclusive. That said, I definitely understand where you're coming from and I think a draft strategy that emphasizes athletic traits over football smarts and production could backfire in a pretty big way if the coaching staff is unable to convert enough of those projects into good players (which wouldn't necessarily be their fault—some players just don't have what it takes).

On the other hand, characteristics like size and speed can't really be coached so I get the attraction and hypothetically, if a team has good teachers and willing players with the tools necessary to excel, I can understand why they'd want to shoot for "high upside" players and coach 'em up.

We'll see how it works out.

While we were all worried about the O-line I have to give credit to Spielman sticking with his board and still being able to pick up 3 pretty decent O-line prospects. Between them and Yankey I'm confident someone will be playing LG no worse than CJ did. Also glad we have more options at the tackle position now as well.
This approach reminds me of what the Vikings did when they found the cupboard bare at WR a couple years ago. They brought in a ton of prospects and gave them a chance to see who could earn the right to stick.

Its also interesting to see how extensively the Vikings are looking at Tackles. Even players like Yankey and Shepherd who are slated to compete at G are guys with Tackle experience in college. Add in Mike Harris, Tiny Richardson, T.J. Clemmings, Tyrus Thompson, Babs, Carter Bykowski, and Austin Wentworth and it seems clear they value the skillset and positional versatility of Tackles over the skillset of Guards at the moment.

Burger and Fusco are the only Guards on the roster without significant Tackle experience.

Good point. They obviously want backups with the versatility to play more than one OL position.

Yeah, as they should, it's very valuable when it comes to cutting down to that 53 man roster. Might mean the difference between keeping a guy they really like (at any position) who's on the fringe.

There's certainly value in versatility but I think it has to be weighed against expertise in a single area. To put in another way, I think a pure guard who excels at his position but lacks the versatility to move outside is more valuable than a player who provides greater versatility but less overall quality of performance.

They have a gaping hole at left guard and they drafted 3 tackles. We'll see if that proves to be a good approach or not.

I wonder if another factor is the likelihood of getting slightly better pass protection out of guys with that skill set. Norv didn't get to run his offense last year do to poor protection. I can't wait to see what they can do with some deeper drops.

I think a lot of what Spielman says regarding confidence in the coaching staff will play out on Sundays. There are other aspects to it that might be even more important that combine stats or on the field football stats. Things like character, work ethic, attitude, coachability, etc. If they can successfully ID guys with these traits AND athletic ability then the strategy is likely to succeed. If anything Spielman was putting the onus on himself with those statements.

Interestingly, I wonder how well Mike Wallace will fit into that character description?

Dooooo it Rick. Please? I don't ask for much.

Mychal Kendricks - LB - Eagles

CBS' Jason La Canfora says Chip Kelly was "calling all around the NFL trying to pawn [Mychal Kendricks] off for a second-round pick."

Kendricks is a rising stud at inside linebacker, but is entering the final year of his contract. Chip was never going to get a second-round pick under those circumstances, especially when everyone knows how south the coach is on him. Now that the draft is behind us, the Eagles may have to settle for something like a 2016 fourth-rounder if they want to dump Kendricks. Kiko Alonso, Demeco Ryans and third-round rookie Jordan Hicks are Chip's preferred inside 'backers.

I dunno, even a 4th rounder to rent a player for one year for a team that doesn't look like it'll be going to the superbowl just yet doesn't seem like a wise move to me.

That's why if you like what he does for you you have first shot at extending him. And perhaps at a discount thanks to his (presumably fully-recovered) injury.

I have been a huge Mychal Kendricks fan since he was drafted in 2012. Kendricks, Barr and Kendricks would not even be fair. DO IT RICK!!!

Vikings waive five players, including offensive linemen Antonio Richardson, Austin Wentworth
Waived were safety Ahmad Dixon, running back Henry Joseph, tight end Ryan Otten, tackles Antonio Richardson and Austin Wentworth. The moves were needed to make sure the Vikings didn’t exceed the offseason roster limit of 90.

The waiving of the two tackles was perhaps the most surprising of the moves. The Vikings seemed to have had high hopes for Wentworth and Richardson, who missed last season because of knee surgery. However, they took offensive linemen T.J. Clemmings, Tyrus Thompson and Austin Shepherd in last week’s draft.

The Vikings are expected later Thursday to sign 10 undrafted free agents after they take physicals. They announced Tuesday they had agreed to terms with cornerback Justin Coleman, center Tom Farniok, safety Anthony Harris, quarterback Taylor Heinicke, fullback Blake Renaud, wide receivers DeVaris Daniels, Jordan Leslie and Gavin Lutman and guards Jesse Somsel and Bobby Vardaro
@ArifHasanNFL Yea, heard it was osteoarthritis re: Tiny Richardson. Degenerative condition like Brandon Roy's knees.
