I think what some people are really saying (well wanting to say) when they talk about Darnold not being back next year, is they don't want to get back into an oversized QB contract.
What do you think Darnold will command on the open market next year? Does he value the impact of the infrastructure that KOC and the organization provides him?

If he keeps up his current pace and plays well in at least one playoff game the Vikings will resign him, or try really hard. Somewhere between 25-35m a year for 3 years.
Some other team might throw Cousins type money at him and if so he'll have to take it. I dont think the Vikes will tho. Otherwise I think he's had enough of being on dumpster fire offenses. On top of that, people know he can't lift a team out of "dumpster fire" status. His time with the Jets and Panthers both prove that. Obviously he can come into a good situation and take the reigns, but are there any other teams like that out there? Good offenses that just need a QB? Looking at other NFL rosters what teams would want to even bring him in? So many QB needy teams just drafted one.
It'd be one thing if we knew for a fact JJ would be awesome and stay healthy. At this point though he immediately had a season ending injury in a non contact practice session. We don't even know if he can stay on the field let alone what his game will look like at the pro level.
On the other hand Darnold is 27 and through 13 weeks has played like a top 5-10 QB. If they can get him for decent money I don't know how you let him walk.
Maybe KOC is confident that he could turn Daniel Jones around just like Darnold? If Darnold signs for a reasonable amount though why risk it?

They could also use a tag. Washington tagged Cousins twice while they searched for his replacement. Of course they are still searching and made a pick this year. If they tag him they can let JJM have another year or twol. I don't know how it impacts a player to be away from the game or how the injury will respond once he starts practicing/playing. I know pre season means nothing. Sloter for us looked great and never did anything.
KOC and the coaches he hired deserve credit for Darnold's turn around but I think it also applies to Darnold as a player. Darnold was considered a much better prospect than Jones when they came out. Jones's arm is nothing like Darnolds or JJMs so that also needs to be considered. Teams need QBs and no team is jumping at Jones. Jones also has been hurt a few times in his career.
There are three types of franchise tags: the non-exclusive tag, exclusive tag and transition tag.
NON-EXCLUSIVE TAG: This tag allows the player to sign an offer sheet with another team. The original team has the right to match the offer or receive two first-round draft picks in compensation if the player leaves. This is the most common type of tag.
EXCLUSIVE TAG: This tag completely binds the player to his team. His agent is prohibited from seeking an offer sheet.
TRANSITION TAG: This tag works like the nonexclusive franchise tag, except it only provides the original team the right to match the other team's offer. If the original team decides not to offer a matching bid, it gets no compensation when the player leaves.
Once a player is tagged, the two sides have until July 15 to sign a long-term contract or, by NFL rule, the player will play on the one-year deal (or hold out).
The value of the non-exclusive tag is the average of the top five salaries at the player's position over the last five years or 120% of his previous salary (whichever is greater).
The value of the transition tag is the average of the top 10 salaries at the position.
QUARTERBACKS: $38,301,000 (non-exclusive), $34,367,000 (transition)

I don't think they'll tag him. Players generally don't like that approach and I think the team wants to be seen as a place where players really want to go.

Next year is the last year for both the GM and HC contracts so it don't really matter how players feel about coming here because both could be gone after next season. Dollars have a loud voice concerning choice. If they feel Sammy gives them the best chance then the 1 year deal makes sense. If they feel JJM gives them the best shot then Sammy is gone.

If KOC is just thinking about next season and that's all you may be right. I don't know why he, or anyone else, would think that though. I think he'll be extended in the off season, personally.
I think the Vikings will let Darnold test his value in free agency and if it's 3yr/105m-ish or less they'll resign him. I think this coaching staff will want both. Let JJ have another full season on the bench as backup and then trade one of them. Or even keep JJ on the bench a 3rd year unless he beats Darnold out.
One thing is for sure, after last season I believe the coaching staff understands how quickly things can go downhill when your starting QB goes down. I think if they can have Darnold and JJ both they'll prefer that.

I think keeping both is the smart move. I also think you should try and get something before letting a guy walk for nothing. We'll see how it plays out. I just hope they keep winning and for once in a long time play solid through out the playoffs. No 41-0 or 36-7 type of blowouts.

Vikings likely to add Daniel Jones to active roster for comp pick reasons.

Love it. Game within the game. We need to maximize everything we can for draft assets where possible.

I don't know that he'll take the Vikings anywhere but I wouldn't be shocked to see him play. Darnold takes a lot of hits.

I doubt Jones will play at any point this postseason. As far as I've read if Jones leaves in free agency and he's on the active roster at the end of the season the Vikings can get a 3rd round compensatory pick, which is great because I believe after what will be a fairly low 1st round pick in this upcoming draft KAM won't be on the clock again until the 5th round.
Then again, maybe KOC has bigger plans for Jones. I personally never understood why the Giants took him in the 1st. Classic case of a GM thinking he's smarter than everyone else. Jones doesn't process the field well post snap at all and scrambles to run rather than scrambles to keep his passing options alive. Once a defense takes that away from him he's as ineffective as Josh Dobbs.

I think it's called a reach. IMO the 2 top QBs this year shouldn't go round 1. But they will both be top 5. It will put bodies in the seats who will spend money. It's called providing a product for entertainment. KOC has said over and over Mullens will be the backup. Once FA starts will there be a rush for Jones? I doubt it but a team jumped on injured, beat up, loser, old man Cousins so anything is possible. If you have nothing anything is better than that I guess. At least we didn't trade/sign D Watson. That's a back breaker or at least it should be. He won't play until 26. I don't think he took his rehab seriously or his injury ended it for him. I will give Jones credit for ripping our D and somehow getting a contract from that. He looked great twice against junk. Lesson learned.

The Vikings were one of the teams that wanted Cousins - Atlanta just offered him more. The Falcons also went ahead and drafted a QB high in the 1st round anyway, which at the time seemed perplexing but maybe in retrospect makes more sense.

Jones ripped the Vikings defense because Donatell played a scheme and didn't gameplan to stop him from running. Talk about someone who should maybe have been a coach and never a coordinator, Ed Donatell's picture would be next to the definition of that.
Speaking of which, let's hope Flores has a good plan to neutralize Puka and doesn't let Stafford beat them with the short stuff like happened last time these teams faced each other. Stafford is known for his ability to read the blitz and get the ball out quickly to counter it, so this might be a week we see less blitzing by the Vikings and more tight coverage. The Rams aren't known for their vertical passing game, and making Stafford hold the ball is the best way to rattle him.
