The whining about Cousins is really ridiculous! I guess you whiners want Ponder back!

I like Cousins but continuing to pay him so much guaranteed money seems like a very questionable choice.
His contract is nothing special in todays QB market. He played very well for us this last season. I expect three more great years as he is in his prime.

According to Over the Cap, Minnesota Vikings Kirk Cousins will be paid $21 million in 2020, $31 million in 2021 and a whopping $45 million in 2022.

Me: he has a 10 million dead cap hit in 2022 so if they want to part ways they save 35 million. I'm wondering what QBs will make on average when 2022 rolls around.
The bad QBs will be making 30 Million plus. The Good ones 50 million or more.

Sucks those are our only two options, Cousins or Ponder.

Nobody's going to take on that contract. You're looking at upwards of $40 million for year 2022.
Never say never. Texans traded Hopkins for jack and coke; there are plenty of idiots who will bite.
Tell me the last time a team traded for a player with a 40 million contract, I will wait

That's the rational used to never make changes.

Not a fan of signing him to the extension. Probably not able to trade him with that insane 40something million year. Too much money tied up in a mediocre QB.

Cousins is not even close to mediocre, if you want to see mediocre, look at Tannehill

Seems like a pretty fair deal then. They just need to continue building the line for him.

We can quibble about the guaranteed money, the overall total, Cousins' stats, etc. but to me, what this move signals, loud and clear, is "expect more of the same". More Cousins. More Spielman. More Zimmer. More teams with the same basic strengths and weaknesses we've been seeing and probably more postseason disappointment (when they actually get there).

The Vikings seem stale and satisfied, happy to embrace the relative safety of the status quo as long as it fills seats.

If it keeps them employed, why would they ever change?

Well, it won't be. It will be $35 million. The $45 million comes from the $35 base salary plus the $10 million signing bonus.

He did win a playoff game...

My view on Cousins: He was the reason we lost in week 2 vs. GB. However, for most of 2019 he was a positive for the vikings. IMO the falling off of the defense was the main culprit in 2019, which wasn't his fault. However, he also didn't elevate the offense enough to overcome some of those issues. Now, he didn't have a full strength Theilen for most of the year, so that could be part of it. But again, he wasn't the main the driver of the offense.

How many guys are there in the NFL anymore that really elevate their team at QB? IMO you have Mahomes, Jackson, Wilson, and Rogers although he isn't what he once was. Brady despite all his accomplishments is not the driving force of an offense any more. Same with Brees.

So of the non elite QBs, where does Cousins rank? I'm guessing he is probably top 5 or top 10. Guys like Brady, Brees, and Big Ben are probably ahead of him due to resumes even if their play has fallen off. But after that, who is better? To me this is why he gets paid.

Jimmy G gets an obnoxious salary also and the most important people on his offense are the TE and the Head Coach. QB salaries in the NFL are out of whack past the top 4, but that isn't really Cousins' fault is it?

Tannehill played well last year, but given the entire body of work Cousins is better and it's not close.
