Good pick in the 4th. From what I've read, Samia has to mature a bit emotionally and pay more attention to the details as a pro, but physically and mentally, he's more than capable of becoming a regular starter.

That's why the Josh Kline signing baffles me a bit. He doesn't seem all that athletic. Maybe they know something we don't.
Given how well Bradburry and Samia can reach and seal blocks, I can't help wonder if they might want those guys at Guard. Could Kline be in the mix at Center?
Imagine running outside zone, 2 TE, and having a pair of guards who can reach and seal the DT, allowing the TE to seal the DE and your athletic tackle (we also have two of them) to pull and lead block. Samia and Bradbury are probably the two best interior OL at this in the 2019 draft.

Having 800 6th and 7th round picks doesn't help the team. We all "get" the math but it assumes everything is in a vacuum. Plus, 10% is still not something I would want to hang my hat on. You would need to have 10 picks in the latest rounds to get one player who "sticks" whatever that means. That is really bad odds.
I'd much rather use a bunch of early picks and see what happens.
Plus like I said before... How many super bowls has Spielman been to, not won, but been to, by employing this "strategy".

Well, I just did some reading on Kline. I didn't realize this, but according to him, the Titans ran predominantly outside zone with a West Coast feel -- essentially Kubiak's system. He says the assignments will be similar, and the terminology is a spot-on match. Again, it appears Kubiak and Stefanski are looking for certain types of players on the O-line.
That applies to running backs, as well. Backs in zone blocking schemes have to be comfortable running nearly parallel to the line of scrimmage, then when the hole appears, putting a foot in the ground and stepping on the gas. Dalvin Cook is perfect for that. Don't know about the guy they drafted, Mattison, but my guess is he can do the same sorts of things. Kubiak's system also calls for the quarterback to work under center a lot, running pass plays and run plays from the same formations, and using a lot of play-action. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but this could really help Cousins.
It's gonna be interesting.

Remember, Shanahan drafted Cousins and has always been one of his biggest supporters. If Cousins can succeed in the NFL, it will be in this system.

I believe they only ran outside zone the last year he was there, which worryingly was when he struggled.

I don't know anything about Samia but my concern is how much is him and how much is his teammates. Almost the entire OU line was drafted, I think only the center didn't get taken and that's because he wasn't draft eligible. I know at least two went before Samia.

Yes, I'm not sure what they like about Kline, but they paid him like he is going to start. Given this teams reluctance to start the best player rather than the highest paid player, its one of the biggest red flags for me in this offseason.

There's something about cap implications. Something about not counting against the cap if not in the top-X at their position. And I read something about having more lottery tickets in later rounds improves your chances at hitting on a pick after the third round. Something like a 6% hit rate in the fifth (for example) and if you have 4-5 sixth rounders your chances go from 4-5% to 10-20% or something.
Math is hard.
we all get the Math, but thanks for the insulting comment. But you are completely over-simplifying it. If we had an unlimited roster and we could keep 250 guys if we wanted, and evaluate them over years to see how they develop (or a minor league system like MLB or something), then your math would make more sense. But we don't. It's a 53 man roster so just a couple deep at most positions. And the coaches have just weeks to evaluate in Camp and make decisions. what do you guys think that after evaluating guys in games/tape/interviews/etc for years, suddenly in camp the Coaches just get to role dice to see which will have a successful career, so the more roles the better? Oversimplification. I get that it helps to get a guy in camp to see how he looks up close in your system, but the coaches still have to quickly make decisions and cut down to 53. It's like Rick just wants to kick the can and push the tough decisions onto the coaching staff.
Like I said in another thread, to me it seems like Rick just doesn't have trust in his own evaluation process, so he just collects as much as possible and hopes someone sticks and pushes the decisions onto the coaching staff. Trust your process and your board and bring in the guy you like best!!!
Dude, I wasn't insulting you. I was insulting myself for not knowing exactly what I'm talking about just trying to communicate (poorly) what I've read recently about the theory around stockpiling late round picks.

Hahaha sorry man!!! I interpreted it as sarcasm and you were calling us all a bunch of morons for not following your math. My bad!

Exactly that’s what I keep trying to explain but some don’t seem to get it. If you just trade up and lose all your later round picks you’re going to end up with about 4-5 picks in the entire draft. The more players you draft, the more chance you find guys that make an impact. I feel like that’s just common sense
Give me 3 top 10 picks and keep the rest. How is that for common sense. There's no explaining loading up on 6th and 7th rounders. Basically what you're saying is give me 32 7th round picks and I'll give you my first 6 picks and be better off. More players. You will never find a dominate QB, RB, WR, Pas Rusher ect like that. You won't get a dominate anything. Yes having every pick in round 7 increases your chances but all 32 of those picks will be for garbage players. Even the few that stick will never amount to much. What we did was a head scratchier for me. I' prefer to trade all those garbage picks for a 2nd rounder. You won't find a trade partner.

Well what you prefer is not realistic. We had 3 seventh round picks. Have you ever heard of anyone trading all their late picks for a second rounder? No. And you never will. It couldn’t be more unrealistic so I don’t know why we’re discussing it

I think we are probably going to see a starting OL of Reiff/Bradbury/Elflein/Kline/O'Neill hopefully with Samia replacing Kline pretty quickly.

I think Bradbury will take over C. Hopefully they figure it out early in camp.

Yes! Whatever they do, I hope they figure it out early in camp. I think Bradbury and Samia project really well to guard, but I'll be happy with however they line them up if we can finally run the ball with some consistency.
