Kind of a high pick to take a project. I hope they think he is close. Of course rushing the passer is not as technical as running routes.

I was kinda hoping for a guard here.

I was hoping for Paul Dawson or Eli Harold IDK this one has me scratching my head after two very good picks IMO.

I wasn't thrilled about this pick. Feels so much like the Crichton pick last year. We already have a guy drafted too early in a draft that can't play the position. Hopefully this doesn't make 2.

I have criticized Spielman in the past for throwing away valuable picks to move up a few spots. But this year when Marpet was taken, I was thinking.. You throw away 2nd and 3rd round picks like they are nothing, why not throw a 5th or 6th away to move up and grab AJ Cann. Hoping we can find our guard help. Or maybe we have to enter the sweepstakes for Justin Blalock, and wait another year or 2 for a young guy to come in and take over at LG.

It sounds to me like that is exactly what they tried to do. Rick said he tried to move up in the 3rd, but it didn't work out, so they traded down. I have to think they had a few prospects in mind for G (Marpet, Cann, etc.) for the 3rd round, but when the pool dried up they went into a plan B mode.

Eh. The only other players I would have taken a chance on when we selected would have been T.J. Clemmings, Paul Dawson, or Ty Montgomery. If nothing else, we add least have some higher round, youthful depth behind Everson Griffen and also the chance that Hunter or Critchon can take over for Robison.

Hope this guy works out but that lack of production at LSU is troubling (1.5 sacks last year while playing 80% of defensive snaps). This looks like an "analytics" pick where his size-speed-agility trumped his on-field performance in order to justify taking him this early. Not a fan of drafting projects in the 3rd round. Looked at his game tape against Wisconsin and was unimpressed. Hope we didn't take a 'looks like Tarzan plays like Jane' type player in the 3rd round.

Couple things, remember Zimmer's defensive ends don't typically rack up sacks like a lot of other systems. Their #1 goal is to set the edge and clog the running lanes / get penetration into the back field. While Hunter didn't have the sacks, he lead the team with 13 tackles for a loss so schematically that's exactly what we're looking for.

Obviously he's the typical HWS prospect (heigh weight speed) with some work to do but he is only 20 years old and when Zimmer get's his hands on him if he can help him improve we're basically talking about having 2 Everson Griffens at DE.

It's some what risky but there is a lot of upside there.

Wouldn't take much to be better than Robison in this defense...

Yeah, you can see why our coaches LOVE this guy, he's doing everything we expect out of our DE's in those clips. Not one of those plays is a sack but they're all GREAT football plays that get your defense off the field or into good situations. I love how he blows up those runs for a tackle for a loss and disrupts those screen plays.

I'm so excited to see what he'll do down the road.

Maybe have him in for running downs (short yardage) and Robison for the pass rushing on sure passing downs (keeps everyone fresh) which is what Zim tries to do.

Yeah, I doubt it for the first year. He'll get the Scott Crichton/David Yankey treatment. He's apparently a solid special teams guy so maybe he can contribute there in his first year.

The guy is a physical freak and young. He will probably play special teams, and by the end of the year,
pass rush specialist... The compared him to JPP from the Giants, who was a demon in the pass rush, when the
giants won the Super Bowls.

Well will have an awesome pass rush...

1 out of 3?? Because YOU don't like Waynes but just about everyone else on the planet had him as the #1 CB in this class. I know who I'll be siding with on this one.
