With 4 left I imagine Cassel will probably play till we lose one then maybe see freeman to finish out the year? Unless they REALLY want to keep freeman hidden.

Haha, Leslie Weaselwords Milquetoast Frazier wouldn't be caught dead saying something as confident, definitive and substantial as "Cassel will start against the Ravens" as early as Wednesday; it took Cassel to take that step and say "I'm starting" while Leslie tries to continue his awesome and ingenious strategy of keeping the team(s) guessing.

I can't wait until he is gone. Unfortunately I have zero confidence that he is going anywhere.

Damned good thing they picked up Josh Freeman to be their 3rd QB. Otherwise, any playoff and Super Bowl hopes for this season could be lost this Sunday if Cassel were to be injured.

You know they wracked their brains looking for some excuse to start Ponder, but they just couldn't fabricate one that wouldn't have resulted in waves of laughter from the entire press corps and fan base.

Thanks for the link, Jim. One has to wonder what will happen if Cassel does fairly well. Will he be the starter from that point on? I would not rule out Ponder returning as the starter, especially if Cassel bombs out.

It doesn't but who knows? I'm guessing, as Tribune writer Mark Craig said in a recent chat, that the Vikings are learning just how difficult it is to bring a QB in mid-season and get much out of him.

Freeman must look really bad in practice or the Vikes are just hiding him hoping they can re-sign him for cheap to compete for the job next year.

Now that is a terrifying thought. But I certainly wouldn't put it past the geniuses in charge of the Vikings today.

No question, though. He'll be signed for cheap next year. The Tampa Bay fiasco, the Giants game, and the fact that he's sitting on the bench behind the likes of Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel, will not have anyone jumping out of their seats to sign him.

Watch Cassel get knocked out of Sunday's game with an injury and Freeman come in and light it up. That would have me ROFL. I guess that's our only hope of seeing him play again.

I just see flashes of TJack when I look at Cassel. Not athletically, of course, but I can't tell if he's just horribly inconsistent or a complete headcase that can only come in and perform well when there's literally no pressure on him to do so. Look at how poorly he played against Carolina. He came into that game knowing that he was going to be the starter. If I recall correctly, his start against Pittsburgh was a last minute scratch for Ponder that gave Cassel the go. I just remember seeing Jackson perform like that so many times when Childress played around with him and Frerotte in 2008. Just a thought...

Ponder and Jackson do have some similarities. Both are capable running QBs. Both have poor pocket presence and panic easily. Both have a striking inability to lead an offense. Jackson has the superior arm, though, and it's clearly an advantage on the mid range and longer passes. They have comparable career completion percentages and passer ratings, with Ponder having a slight edge. Jackson has better stats in both yards per attempt and yards per catch.

This was an interesting read. Cassel bashers can use it as a handy reference to some of his bad stats. What I found extremely interesting though was all the faults that are attributed to him are EXACTLY what he has done well for us. Its like I was reading about Ponder, not Cassel. He doesn't lock on his reads, that's Ponder. He doesn't hold the ball too long, that's Ponder. He is not making slow decisions, that's Ponder. He has not been inaccurate, that's Ponder. Could it be Cassel is still improving? Or is it just that he is so obviously better than Ponder at those things? Doesn't matter to me, he's earned the right to finish this season IMO.

Now that's the really scary thing isn't it? If Cassel is bad at those things and Ponder's worse..... Yikes!
