Basically, it's going to come down to whether or not Spielman can finally figure out how to draft/acquire a good quarterback (he's screwed up twice, in my opinion) as well as one or more good receivers. I like Spielman's drafts minus the QB position.
Maybe if they'd quit targeting "west coast" quarterbacks that are undersized, slightly athletic, and accurate in the short game. And get a guy who can make plays and not just scramble now and then and throw 3 yard slants. Thought maybe with Childress gone we'd quit with the smurfs, but nope, first thing Spielman does is force a smurf in the first round.

Why are you still beating that smurf/midget drum? There's plenty to criticize about Ponder's game but his height isn't an issue. He's the same height as Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo and he's taller than Drew Brees. Those 3 don't seem to have trouble being prolific passers in the NFL.

Plus he is advocating bringing Vick on the team who is 2 and 1/2 inches shorter and 20 pounds lighter, plus he is a convicted criminal.

Try reading the posts. The Demi was dogging Ponder (for the 1000000 time)for only being 6-2 230 pounds (referring to him as a midget) and talking about certain aspects of the team causing "rot" within. That being said, he has a number of times advocated signing Vick who is barely 6-0 and weighs 20 lbs less and is a multi convicted criminal (talk about "ROT").

I'm advocating Vick as a temporary measure until we can hopefully find a franchise QB. Because he's better than most of the alternatives. And will give us a significantly better chance of winning a playoff game than Ponder. If he was coming out in the draft right now would I want him? Nope! Maximize physical attributes! If you've got 6'3+ guys blocking for you, it can only help to be taller, have a higher release, not have to find throwing lanes as much. Obviously some 6'2 quarterbacks can have success, but so have a higher number of taller quarterbacks.
Go 6'4 quarterback, go! No more smurfs!

BIG TIME AGREED !!!! Why we didn't draft A WR first round and Ryan mallet in the 3nd instead of Ponder is mindblowing to me

I find it absolutely amazing that this team is in playoff contention with the worst starting qb in the nfl. Could you imagine if we had maybe just a top 15 qb. this team would be contending for a super bowl and we still haven't finished the (rebuilding process)

Really, one freakin inch makes all the difference. This board has been down this road too many times with your midget/smurf talk. Next comes the list of all the great QBs that have some how been super stars and are 6-2 or 6-3. Elway, Montana, Brees (6-0), Rodgers, Rg111, Staubach, Young, Tarkenton, Favre etc etc etc. Give it a rest
Ponder is 6-2 230 lbs. and that is a midget in your world
Yes I get it, you hate Ponder and can't hardly stand it when he is playing well

Since it's obviously true that 6' 2" QBs can be successful in the NFL, why rule one out in the draft if the team believes he has the right stuff? It's certainly true that physical attributes should be a consideration but you're taking the idea of maximizing those attributes to a silly extreme. A 6' 2" QB isn't a "smurf" and ruling a 6' 2" QB out in the draft because he isn't 1" taller would be pretty foolish, especially when one of the very best QBs in the league is that height!
As for Vick, I doubt he'd give them a significantly better chance to win a playoff game. They wouldn't be getting Michael Vick circa 2004. The injury-prone coach killer's best days are clearly behind him. He's played in one playoff game since 2004, hasn't played a complete season since returning to the NFL after getting out of prison and he's not the rushing or scoring threat he was in prime.

Ahem,.......getting back to the subject on hand. I think the team is heading in the right direction and don't think we will slide next season. The team is being built with the correct perspective. Build through the draft and pick good quality players and be smart leveraging your position in the draft. Sprinkle in a veteran here and there and we now have a good start. OK we might have missed on THE QB as of now, but don't panic, this is a long term view. The Wilfs may not be genius but they are committed and that is more than we could ask for. As for Frazier......I'm still not completely sold on him. The performance after the bye....terrible, the win at Houston......awesome. I guess he is still learning too. I would like to hire a couple of position coaches out of the carnage that will happen on Monday to continue to improve the team. I'm not sure of who will come available but I'd bet there are a few good ones that will get cut loose.
As for the Lions comparison, this is a completely different franchise. The lions rode the "the world is against us" train to some success but did not learn how to handle that success. Ironically, they have what all us Vikings fans want, A big strong armed QB and the best receiver in the game. They are also loaded with talent and free agents and are still at the bottom of our division. What does that mean? I think it means that BALANCE still matters. No team wins consistently being one dimensional. Including the Vikings. So much for this being a passing league.
I'm exited already to see where Speilman takes us in the next draft. It will be interesting to see where he thinks the priorities are. It should give us an idea of what to expect.

I would love to see Vick for 1 year. Just imagine Vick, AD, and Harvin in the same backfield! Heck, it would be cool to see Joe Webb!
Teams aren't afraid of Ponder running or passing. At least Vick would make a defense think twice about focusing completely on AD.
I understand what the Vikings are trying to do.....going against the NFL grain with a run 1st offense, building a strong defense, controlling the clock and winning old school style. I get it, don't necessarily agree with it, but I get it and support it. But then why waste a #12 overall pick on a total reach at QB??? That's what I find most frustrating. Seahawks did much better with Wilson in what.....the 3rd round? At least this is consistent with their philosophy.

LOL when has he been playing 'well'? 100 yards passing and only 1 turnover isnt playing well. Some QBs can throw for 300-400 yards, even with our receivers. We had another QB that when he didnt lose the game for us, some thought he had a good game. His name was Tjoke.
