None of the sailors on those merchant ships have anywhere close to the training you do. Putting something like a deck gun on every ship requires that a lot of people be trained to shoot that gun.

There is a numbers game here too. While the pirates have taken a bunch of ships, something like 10,000 go through the area every year, so only a very tiny percentage are being attacked.

IMO, the Navy should "accidentally" release whatever video they have of the snipers hitting the pirates. Perhaps seeing heads explode would put some fear into these morons.

I'm sorry guys, but I think you're missing the point entirely.

This is not solved through guns but through fear. Sadly, there pirates have nothing to fear: they have no job, no safety (not even in their own towns), very little or no properties, etc. And so far it's easier for them to get money illegaly than legaly they prefer to hijack ships instead of fishing or agriculture (bear in mind that manufacturing jobs and factories are very scarse in the region, so those aren't optins).

So how do you make them fear you? First you have to invest in their countries: build factories, give proper and safe jobs, etc. This way, they will not risk what little they have to go and do something risky and illegal. So let them generate an income, maybe own something and then they will obey because they won't want to lose it.

And for the person who had the idea of showing footage of the snippers hitting the pirates, don't you think this would make them angry rather than fearful; because, once again, they have absolutely nothing to lose?

Just my 2 cents

And history repeats itself...

You sure? I think the marines are just part of the navy.

In my opnion, a lot of people are missing the point on this. These types of things aren't about "numbers" and it overall being "cheaper" to do option a than option b. These things have to be confronted on principle. Any society that reduces conflicts to "numbers" instead of principles is doomed to eventual obliteration.

Just a side note....I'm not sure I am too excited about lots of well armed foreign ships docking here in America. That could also be a problem...

I'm Mexican and some of our ships are there, trust me, you have NOTHING to worry about. :)

about 100% sure, though every navy ship just about has marines on it. :wallbang:

They should just send a handful of submarines to the area and torpedo the #### out of any pirate boats they see.
Honestly, you'd think the Navy are foaming at the mouth right now to go and "have some fun"

Torpedos aren't that great a weapon against the little boats the pirates generally have. The bigger ones they have that would be a good torpedo target are often the ones they're already holding with hostages on board. :(

this would work not a cheap option but could patrol the range from the port
where the pirates are attacking.
