Cassel played three games for the Vikings last year and lost two of them :? So yeah he could win some games and lose twice as many....good riddance

Cassel knew the system already? Well yeah but so does Hill. He played for Turner in SF hence why they wanted to sign him.

Also, both Cassel and Hill have played for 4 different teams. So there is no difference in that aspect. Cassel got that starting job based on experience, not talent. I've mentioned that multiple times already

In all honesty, I have yet to see anyone put up a good fight as to why we should have kept Cassel based on what we saved and got for him. Which is why I don't understand why people continue to argue it. It all boils down to people "thinking" he's the better choice when In reality, there is hardly a difference and we benefited from it

I prefer Hill because he's a bit chubby, and seems like he might be slightly drunk whenever he plays.

seriously, he just seems like some dude that might hang out at the bar watching the game, not holding a clipboard waiting to play in the game.

that's why my vote is with Hill!!!!!!

Plus if you look at his numbers in Detroit as compared to Stafford's (most overrated QB in the NFL), I think they are reasonably similar!!!

Yeah but the team lost Peterson which changed the offense a lot and one of those teams was New England. The super bowl winners BTW.

I have to admit I like Cassel and always have. He seems like a good team guy. I don't ever remembering Hill doing anything to impress me, but I am not an expert
on his career. The other thing is Cassel lost his job due to injury, to some extent. I don't like when that happens. I think teddy would have taken it at some and made
the most of an opportunity. Good for Teddy... The only reason I want A.P. to stay is it will help Teddy a lot. I mean Peterson is an unreal talent. In the 2000 yard season
every team stacked the box and he still rip off what 1500 plus yards in 10 games ??

Hill is on the team and I hope he does a good job. If it where my choice I would have kept cassel, but it is not mine to make.

I look at it in terms of what's best for the team...and right now that means what's best for Teddy.
At this point in his career he can really benfit from an older guy with lots of experience who can point out the not so obvious details about the position.
Hill may not have tons of game time reps, but he's seen and broken down more game film than anyone on the offensive side of the ball other than the coaches. He's completely comfortable in the role of backup and has already expressed an eagerness to create competitions in practice to get more out of Teddy rather than more for himself.
-
Cassel really wanted another shot at starting, and frankly I think he deserves it if someone will give him the shot.
-
Considering who might be the best mentor in Turner's system may have more merit than which outta the two guys was marginally better as a gameday QB.
Hill may actually be a better fit in that sense...he's a tad cheaper too.
-
I haven't heard or looked anything up...I know Cassel liked being in Minny, but I assume he likes his situation better in Orchard Park. He gets one last shot...no regrets.
It's all a win/win IMO.

Cassel got that starting job based on experience, not talent.
And how did he get that experience?
By being more talented...
It all boils down to people "thinking" he's the better choice when In reality, there is hardly a difference and we benefited from it
People? Try NFL front offices. "People" are the ones that think he isn't the better choice, when in reality there is a meaningful difference, and yes, we did benefit from it, or we wouldn't have had those millions to save, and draft picks to receive, moving him.

Now we have a below average mentor as our backup. Which is fine, as long as he never has to play...

What? No he got his experience from being in the league for 9 years. The Bills traded for him out of desperation. They didn't have a whole lot of choices

Honestly Cassel might have told them
He would like to start. Like I have said
previously I hope Teddy stays healthy
and none of this will matter.

I don't think it matters who our backup QB is. Our ceiling this year is probably 10-6 if we get a great year from Teddy. If Teddy goes down for more than a full game, we're are likely not a playoff team. Teams that need good backups are playoff teams that need to grind out a win or two from their backup until the starter can get healthy.

This is what I see and believe also. Woe to those playoff teams that don't have a viable backup QB. Saints, Broncos, Colts etc......it's just foolish.
I think the Cardinals had a decent guy, but he got hurt also.
The Dolphins should be seriously looking, Niners, Falcons, Panthers etc.

The only teams I think who have a good guy, at least that I know of, are the Pack, Pats and Seahawks. Yeah, I think TJack is a good backup, due to the length of time he's been in that system up there.
I don't know the guys in he AFC North or who the Lions or Chargers have, but those are all teams, IMO who should look to draft a guy if they don't have one....Cleveland excluded of course. unless it's a starter.

Shaun Hill is an excellent career backup. One of the best in the business. He can come in and provide competent play and he is under no illusion that he's going to be the starter. He's the perfect #2 QB. What the Vikings need is another young QB with upside to fill the #3 spot. A guy who can come in when your starter goes down for the whole year, as opposed to just a couple games.

Agreed. He's always been ok when filling in. Everyone thinks there are so many better QBs out there that our GM and coaches couldn't find which is completely false. If you rank every backup in the NFL, I can guarantee that Shaun Hill is top 10, probably even top 5. So my point is, who cares about Cassel.

What's more important?? Holding onto a 32 year old backup when you can get someone similar for cheaper? Or gaining draft picks to continue to build our young roster? I think everyone knows that answer. It still irks me that people are still continuing to argue this when the facts have been laid out multiple times and continue to show that Cassel wasn't that big of a loss. Especially for what we got in return

I'd expand that to "teams that need good backups are all of them". :)

The idea that a team needs a good backup to grind out a win or two in the absence of the starter flies in the face of what we see practically every year: starters who go down for extended periods of time, sometimes losing most or all of a season. Sometimes a backup needs to become the starter for much more than just a short window of one or two games.

Teams should endeavor to have the best backup QB they can find because at any moment, that player can become the starter.

I always find it baffling that many fans agree QB is the most important position in football yet maintain a laissez-faire attitude about the backup position, when that player is just one injury away from taking over the most important position on the team.

And Hill has 13 years. Why didn't he get those "experience" based opportunities? Because he has less talent than Cassel. As far as the Bills, they had choices, one of them was signing Shaun Hill for half the money and no picks. Instead they traded for Cassel. Because he's a better QB than Hill.
I don't think it matters who our backup QB is.
Most people don't.
Others do. Until you downgrade the position, at which point it isn't as important.
