Re: Matt Cassel
Im not sure i would call Wilson an elite franchise QB just yet. His degense is the main reason they won, followed by their runn game.

The Devil whispered in the Viking's ear, "There's a storm coming." The Viking replied, "I am the storm." #SKOL2018

Here is that blog/article I referred to earlier:

I don't agree with all of it, but it does make a lot of sense. It seems like since the rookie wage scale was instituted, it has just allowed quarterbacks to fatten their wallets.

That's a fact. Ponder and/or Cassel could have won a Super Bowl with the Seahawks defense.PurpleMustReign wrote:Im not sure i would call Wilson an elite franchise QB just yet. His degense is the main reason they won, followed by their runn game.

Maybe *that* super bowl. But they'd never be able to make a play or two to beat the 49ers the game before so it wouldn't even come to that....

Re: Matt Cassel
Yup. Ignore the fact that only 7 teams in the NFL scored more points than the Seahawks did during the regular season. Elite QB. No. But don't write him off quite yet. And that 100.9 QB rating over the last two years, that's just luck. Wait, he's dink and dunk QB that is a game manager. Yea ok. I would take him over anyone the Vikings have.PurpleMustReign wrote:Im not sure i would call Wilson an elite franchise QB just yet. Re: Matt Cassel
The problem, if you win a SB, that QB is going to be paid like an elite franchise QB whether he is or not, Wilson is a massive bargain at this point in his career, as was Rodgers before him, but Wilsons contract is eventually going to be up and the Seahawks are going to need to pay top dollar, hope fully for them he becomes worthy of a massive contract, unlike Flacco.frosted21 wrote:Some would argue that you can't win a Super Bowl with a 'franchise' QB anymore, with how much they get paid. It handicaps the rest of your team. There was a blog post I read on it a while back, I will see if I can find it. Don't know if I buy into it, but it's an interesting topic of discussion.

Currently they have 18% of their 2014 cap tied up in Rice and Harvin. Anyone want to bet Rice gets cut?Purpnation wrote: The problem, if you win a SB, that QB is going to be paid like an elite franchise QB whether he is or not, Wilson is a massive bargain at this point in his career, as was Rodgers before him, but Wilsons contract is eventually going to be up and the Seahawks are going to need to pay top dollar, hope fully for them he becomes worthy of a massive contract, unlike Flacco.

Re: Matt Cassel
Wilson has had more TDs each of his first two seasons than Flacco has had at any year in his career. He's had a better QB rating in both of his first two seasons than Flacco has had at any year in his career. He's had as many or fewer interceptions in both seasons than Flacco in any season. He's also had twice the rushing yards in two years than Flacco in his career. I think he's already worthy of that contract. Unlike Flacco. But like you said you have to pay them. Or you end up like the Ravens before him, or god forbid...like the Vikings of the last how many years. And Raiders, Browns, Bears etc...Purpnation wrote: The problem, if you win a SB, that QB is going to be paid like an elite franchise QB whether he is or not, Wilson is a massive bargain at this point in his career, as was Rodgers before him, but Wilsons contract is eventually going to be up and the Seahawks are going to need to pay top dollar, hope fully for them he becomes worthy of a massive contract, unlike Flacco.
A team could be in limbo for decades trying to find one, and one offensive coordinator with a link to a state and a school who sells a coach and front office could mean the difference between a super bowl ring or not. If the Seahawks stick with Flynn? How many teams would sign Flynn to that deal and play a 3rd round rookie over him? Or the Kaepernick situation and Smith? It's complete insanity with this position.
Re: Matt Cassel
I think that's valid opinion. The NFC Championship was a lot harder fought than the Super Bowl, but to keep things in perspective: The Vikings (with Ponder as QB) scored 24 points against SF the last time they played them in the regular season. (Peterson only rushed for 86 yards in that game, just as an aside). The Seahawks only allowed 17 points in the NFCC game. Whether or not Ponder (from 2012) could duplicate his offensive output (81.2 Passer Rating) is certainly questionable, but I think it's 'even money' he could. YMMVDemi wrote:![]()

Re: Matt Cassel
Peterson cap number for 2014 equals about 11.4% of the Vikings total cap number. Depending on what the final cap number is.Mothman wrote: Peterson's cap hit in 2014 will be $14,400,000.

Re: Matt Cassel
It doesn't make a difference in terms of how the Seattle defense will affect the outcome of the game. The hypothetical is with Seattle's defense (which held SF to 17 points - IMHO they'd have held Smith to less). Ponder would have played against (for the most part) the same defense he played against in 2012. It's not a perfect comparison, but what ever is? In any case, Cassel/Ponder are certainly capable of scoring 18+ points against SF. (The Viking Defense - 2013 version - would have had a difficult time holding SF to only 17 points, but we are 'pretending' they get Seattle's defense for the sake of this point).Valhalla wrote: Looks like the Niners QB was Alex Smith for however that makes a difference in that last game of SF at Minn.

Re: Matt Cassel
Just to be clear: Wilson is a much better QB than Ponder - No one (I don't think anyway) is disputing that. But, do you really think that Cassel or Ponder is incapable of scoring 8 points in a game?808vikingsfan wrote:
I"m not so sure if Ponder/Cassel would have won. Run game? Non existent in the super bowl. I think we are not giving Wilson enough credit. Look at his stat line. Zero interceptions. He was 7 for 8 on third-down passes for 83 yards. Scored on the first 3 Seattle possessions. Couple of bad decisions in the first half, or a couple of 3 and outs early could have changed the outcome of this game. He's not elite, yet. But if he can string together a couple more super bowl wins with similar performances, I think you'd have to start categorizing him as elite.
