He has done ok against suspect defenses, but we need a qb that will perform against the good defenses. For those of you who want to see Cassel be our starting qb next year, then you must be willing to settle for mediocrity. He has been very inconsistent that last 2 years and also this year and is a good backup at best, not a starter. IMHO
Not settling for mediocrity, their just isn't a better option really that I can see right now on the horizon. Maybe if Cutler makes it to free agency he'd be a slight upgrade but ultimately I don't see him taking us to the superbowl, he's the definition of mediocrity in my book. If not him then who? Mike Vick is about the only other guy who could perhaps play better than Cassel but he'd just get hurt.

That leaves the rookie we draft who has zero experience at the NFL level, maybe he could be an immediate upgrade but that's pretty rare. Especially since we're looking at the 2nd or 3rd best QB (or something crazy could happen) given where we are picking.

Josh freeman? I think he's just a total nut job at this point, I wouldn't put much faith in him.

Yeah, I think people are confused on why some of us want Cassel back.

Unless we go the free agency/trade route to get someone significantly better, Cassel should be back on the roster to try to compete for the starting spot. Yeah, compete. If he wins it, he wins it; if he doesn't, he doesn't, but I think he's earned the opportunity to at least try.

For those who don't get it:

Cassel > Ponder and Freeman

And most likely...

Cassel > Rookie QB

Shame on us for wanting the better QB to start.

That pretty well sums up how I feel about our QB situation.

Here's something that surprised me about Cassel. I read it yesterday but forgot to post it here:

Cassel didn't see a single eight-man box last week with Peterson out, and has struggled against that front this season (he has a Total QBR of just 36.3 against eight-man fronts, according to ESPN Stats & Information).

Us Vikings fans have become too accepting of average to below average QB's. We need to expect and demand more.

I'm not saying they shouldn't give Cassel a chance to compete for the job next year, but I think the trend has changed the past few years about sitting rookie qbs. 2 years ago Luck, RGIII, Tannehill, Weeden, Foles and Wilson all started at some point and most performed well. This year there has been EJ Manuel, Geno Smith, Mike Glennon and Matthew McGloin who have all started. I'm not saying that they all played great, but I think teams would rather play their rookie qbs to get them experience, especially if they think they are their franchise qb. You can only learn so much sitting on the bench. So if the Vikings draft a qb I guess I would rather see them start him next year and get the experience rather than have him sit behind Cassel who may get us a 500 record. I would rather build for the future in that situation, even though Cassel may be the better qb at the time. Obviously this is just my opinion and you don't have to agree with it. I just don't think Cassel is the answer.

I don't know that anyone is "happy" with the QB situation, but what else can we do but accept it? I tried calling the Wilf's and Spielman to demand better, but strangely enough they wouldn't take a call from a guy they'd never met before who wanted to lay out his expectations for QB play.

Right! Get a really good QB! Why didn't the vikings think of that before!? They are so plentiful and easily identified, the vikings should be able to find one easily!

Maybe if Spielman was a better judge of talent, then we could have had Dalton or Kaepernick.

Just like every GM who passed on Russel Wilson..

I think the argument leads more to Spielman/Frazier STARTING CHRISTIAN PONDER FOR ALMOST 3 FULL YEARS.
