Good news -- Mike Hughes removed from PUP

Post by J. Kapp 11 »

From Vikings.com:
Mike Hughes passed his physical and been removed from the Physcially Unable to Perform list, the team announced Monday.
That's welcome news. Hopefully he can play soon, if not Week 1.

Good news but not super surprising as I didn’t expect him to miss 6 weeks. Hope he’s ready for Atlanta.

Hughes said he doesn’t have a specific date in mind for returning to full action. But good for us that he's back. That's a plus.

I agree with everybody. Good news. I think Hughes is an exceptional talent that could easily be a pro bowl player if the injuries didn't sap his ability or confidence. Don't rush him of course, but don't hold him back if he's ready. Get back on that horse that bucked you off Mike.

Yeah, he was having a pretty decent rookie season. In five games, he had 22 tackles, 3 passes defended, a forced fumble and a pick six. Not bad for a rookie who wasn't even starting.

The concern for me is the whole "you're not really back until the second year after an ACL" thing. Maybe Hughes can be the second coming of Adrian Peterson.

Well, he's young enough to be able to bounce back, hopefully.

EDIT: Just looked at Hughes's age, he's a year younger than me. Golly, I'm getting old.

If anyone has access to PFF, they can post his passer rating against, yards given up per game and TDs given up per game.

I don't remember the exact numbers but I do know they weren't good and were in fact the worst on the team for a CB by quite a bit.

He certainly showed flashes, but he needs to improve dramatically to be as good as Waynes or Rhodes.

Yeah, that's what I recall too. While he flashed at times, his average performance left a lot to be desired.

Which isn't surprising or a reason to be concerned given he was a rookie.

All I choose to remember is the pick 6 in his very first game. Something as rare as the dodo bird in the Vikings secondary.

Not trying to be a downer on Hughes but his pick six was more because the receiver fell down rather than him jumping a route after reading the quarterback. He's got potential for sure and he still made the play, but just a little perspective.

That happened, but in addition Garrapolo was under duress from the rush and the throw was off target and basically went right to Hughes. Hughes was there and saw the ball coming, picked it and took it to the endzone, but it wasn't like he jumped the route or even had tight coverage. I'd even go so far as to say that if the throw was more accurate there is no way Hughes would have picked it and there is a good chance he wouldn't have even been able to break up the pass.

I'm not trying to disparage Hughes at all. I loved that Spielman took him in the 1st in that draft, and I think he's got a really bright future even after the injury. He's smart, is tough and works hard. He shows solid instincts on the field. He's just got to get some experience and put in the work in the film room.

I agree 100%, I will give him credit for catching the ball though. Viking DBs have never done that well.

LOL, I was born in 1979. Joey browner and Carl Lee were good, but that's as far back as I remember.
