Re: 2015 Vikings Injury Thread
Sully had Lumbar Microdiscectomy surgery. It involves removing the portion of a herniated disc that presses on a nerve root or the spinal cord. He could only have had this diagnosis from an x-ray or MRI. Pretty safe assumption the Vikings knew about his condition almost from the start (assuming they had an x-ray done). He's apparently had one or more epidurals since the injury (Zimmer said the injury occurred on the field).
Looks like they've been trying to rehab this for the past three weeks to see if he could avoid surgery. This surgery (as with all back surgery) is not without risk. Despite the spin from Winter Park, it's not a given that he'll be ready for the 2nd half of the season. He could be looking at a lifetime of pain management and a significant reduction in his quality of life. Unless he's completely pain free (post-surgery) I would not be surprised at all if he decided to hang it up. He just had his first child and has probably made enough money to be financially secure.
Love how Zrimmer said on Tuesday he was "not concerned" about Sully, then on Wednesday Sully has surgery and today we placed him on IR. Of course Zimmer wasn't being truthful when he said that. Doesn't make him any different than most other NFL coaches but it also doesn't excuse that behavior either.

What's scary is Sirles who was on the Chargers practice squad last year. Could be our 3rd best offensive linemen.
The depth is worrisome...hopefully some people step it up.

Thank you. I appreciate it.DK Sweets wrote:I'm not sure if I've said this before, but you're one of my favorite posters, Hardcore. Your analysis of injuries adds an incredible amount of insight and it's greatly appreciated.
I am not an expert on all there is about injuries, but I am in the sports medicine field - so I do have a basis of knowledge.
Anyway, I should clarify my remarks. It is extremely hard (and almost foolish) for me (or anyone) to assume how an injury occurred without seeing a specific mechanism and without being present for the eval. Moreover, the public only gets need-to-know basis about player injuries. HIPAA protects players like Sullivan (although we have seen HIPPA fail numerous times in the NFL). Sullivan could have had a prior history of back injuries. There are a lot of variables.
I have been taught (and seen enough times) to understand that the human body is never black and white. Sully could have had a hyper flexion injury causing a herniation of the lumbar disc (nucleus polpuous herniation). Sully could have lumbar plexus nerve root irritation, causing gross-musculature spasm. There are a lot of things that can happen to cause those posterior muscles to spasm.
EDIT: I see Pseudo explained the procedure a little more. As I stated earlier, Sully is going to have a portion of his lumbar vertebrae removed to facilitate healing. In this instance, a portion of the nucleus polpouous is prolapsed in Sully's back. This causes irritation on the surround posterior nervous system - which can attribute to back spams (spasms in the erector spinae and surrounding musculature). The surgery will remove a part of the prolapsed nucleus polpuous from Sully's lumbar vertebrae. The nature of this injury also was more than likely repetitive stress along with a movement that created hyperflexion of the lumbar spine.
Anyway, I wasn't present during Sully's injury or evaluation. All I can do at this point is assume what is going on. And, you know what they say about someone assuming - it makes an #### out of you and I.

Did you ever think that just maybe they have known about severity for a while but were trying to negotiate a trade with another team for a center. Sort of "blows" their hand if another team knew that they were desperate for that player.
I love all of the second guessing that goes on all of the time when none of us "second guessers" have a fraction of knowledge/insight as to what actually is going on.

As mentioned in the General Comments thread, Fusco didn't practice yesterday due to concussion-like symptoms. Jeremiah Sirles filled in in Fusco's absence.

@christomasson John Sullivan hopes to be back week nine. Says wear and tear injury. Said he wishes surgery done three weeks earlier but did injections they didn't work
Sullivan said he feels guilty but knows that is illogical

@mattvensel Mike Zimmer said Brandon Fusco is still going through the concussion protocol. Said the #Vikings will know if he can play before Sunday.

Zimmer said @XavierRhodes29_ has already passed one concussion test and added “we should be good to go."

WOW... I thought for a second he was paralyzed, and for him to have only a minor concussion, that is almost unreal.NDirish wrote:Zimmer said @XavierRhodes29_ has already passed one concussion test and added “we should be good to go."
