With heavy heart, Sherels stars for Vikings

There's a great little post about Marcus Sherels over on ESPN's site today:

Easy guy to root for, and I'm glad he played well. But from a purely football perspective he's shown little that leads me to believe he's worth a roster spot. If he were an electric return man, I could see it. But he's probably average in that department and below average in coverage. The injury to Felder probably opens the door a little wider for his chances, but if he's forced into any meaningful snaps on defense...God help us.

 You never really want to go that far down the depth chart on defense. It's usually trouble.

If he makes the team, it will probably be because of his value on special teams and although I'd agree that he's average as a returner, he's reliable and he shows good judgment and those are qualities that could earn him a spot again. He's not an electrifying returner but at least we know he can take a punt or kick back all the way. Some returners barely even have the potential to do that.

I think he's the type of player who will always be on the bubble but he could be worth a roster spot until the team finds someone better. It will be interesting to see if last night's performance, the injury to Felder and Sherels' history with the team are enough to get him onto the final roster again.

If the decision was to cut him and it was my job, I'd just hire Brad Childress for an hour and have him do it.

I just saw a replay from his TD. Just like Patterson's before him, the blocking was sensational. Heck, Jim could've probably returned this one. Pause it at around 0:42.

That was great. I like that formation there. All 4 of those guys really opened it up on that side

Wow, that's some serious blocking! Great job by Priefer's ST unit...

There's no way I could have returned that one all the way. My back would start to hurt before I got to the 50 yard line, I'd probably be gassed by 75 yards and everyone on the field would be faster than me! :)

i really hope he doesnt make the team, yea it was a nice return but the blocking was perfect, and his interception could have been made by anyone, it was thrown right to him. this guy cost us waaay too many games last year, when any qb sees him on the field, they throw right at him.

But, as you just stated, he catches balls thrown right at him.

He seems to me to be that kind of a guy. Nothing extraordinary, but at least he takes advantage of opportunities when they arise. The blocking was undeniably good on that return. But, believe or not, some guys would have figured out a way to mess it up. The INT is the same. How many times have we seen our defenders get hit in the hands w/ an errant pass and they don't get the INT? I'll answer: TOO MANY to count.

I think Felder is generally a bit better in coverage and good enough on returns, but his injury will leave a spot for Sherels.
