People also need to be reminded of the monetary returns generated by these projects. There are jobs directly and indirectly created by these types of projects and taxes paid back into the state and city coffers by them (not just stadiums, but all civic projects like this). People get sticker shock when they look at upfront costs, but the overall cost is much less if the project costs are spread over the life of the result. The Metrodome has been around for 30+ years now and, last I read, it was making money for the Met Sports Commission.
People are soooooo quick to throw out the idea of stadiums in the same group as museums, theaters, exhibits, etc. because a lot of people (for whatever reason) question the cultural value. They constantly complain about how "why should I have to pay for your football experience?"

To which I respond "I pay for your museums, theaters, and whatever else...don't use them, and I don't complain about it."

The thing I don't understand is...the ROI in a stadium is MUCH greater in terms of jobs supported, taxes, and supporting surrounding business (like restaurants, bars, and hotels) than any theater or museum can even compare with. Those civic projects are just as valuable to me as any stadium project...and the stadium has the ability to generate far more than any of those other projects. It's so hard to rationalize with those kinds of people though.

Last I heard 150 million per year could be used from the casino to the state. Once the stadium is paid off it'd continue to go to the state to use on whatever they want, including anything you can name.

But the republicans refuse to even consider expansion of gambling. They'd rather chainsaw off their entire face to spite their head.

Pretty hard when the reason the offer made by the tribe won't happen is directly because of a single political party..

Politics for the most part is not acceptable on this message board.
Politics will not be tolerated. Political discussion relating to Stadium or Viking issues is the only exception to this rule. Please keep such discussions as narrow as possible (ie, no "We'll never get a stadium with these despicable Whigs in power"). All other political discussion is strictly off limits. We have had problems with this in the past and have found this to be the best policy. If you find another poster has broken this rule and it disagrees with your own position, it doesn't not make it okay for you to break the rules as well. Instead, please report the post by clicking on the red exclamation point button.

Politics are very fine line in this thread. After writing one of my posts I went back and took out 3 sentences because I felt they may have crossed the line. It is a politically charged discussion that is hard to talk about sometimes. Write your post then re-read it before you post it. It's not worth getting banned over. If in doubt, leave it out.

Though it’s not time to pop the champagne (then again, the Vikings already did that last year when announcing a deal with the folks in Arden Hills), a “preliminary agreement” has been reached to build a new Vikings stadium, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Under the agreement, the Vikings/NFL would kick in $427 million for a building to be constructed near the Metrodome. The state would come up with $398 million, and Minneapolis would pay $150 million. Also, the city would cover $180 million in operating costs over the next 30 years, also known as “the period of time before the Vikings start trying to get another new stadium.”

The Legislature, the Minneapolis City Council, and the NFL still have to sign off on the deal. Which, as we saw after the Arden Hills deal was announced, may never happen.

In fact, the only difference between last year’s “deal” and this year’s “deal” at Arden Hills is that legislative leaders have given it their blessing. Unless the votes are there, the blessing will be as valuable as a marriage ceremony performed by a pizza chef.
So if that's the money involved, anyone know if we're looking at retractable, open, or dome? (pleeeease please no dome, bad enough jamming it back downtown...)

Ill believe it when its actually official. And, IMO, at that money, no retractable roof, be similiar to the stadium in Indy.

I'll believe it when they implode the dome and the Vikings play the first game in the new stadium. Unitl then it's just a bad dream.

I'm not sure this gets done soon, but the latest developments are exciting in that the powers that be may be forced to vote soon, meaning the Minneapolis City Council and the legislature. The new plan appears to lay out all the contributions for a Minneapolis stadium, a big step forward.

And that is why I am an idiot. I completely forgot Monday was Presidents' Day. Maybe cause I have class on Monday...

Regardless, I will be very curious to hear what the legislature has to say about this deal.
