What monopoly? They're not the only ones making players or movies...

For some reason I thought Sony owned the technology. Apparently there's some sort of Blu-ray Disc Association (which you probably know but I've never heard of).

I suppose that's good news, maybe I can afford one of these players in a year or so now.

Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are open standards. It's similar to how DVD was initially developed, except that there were some disagreements, so they split into two camps. Sony put a bunch of money into developing Blu-Ray equipment, so they were one of the big advocates for the format. Ditto Toshiba with HD-DVD. Now that Toshiba has dropped HD-DVD, expect to see them making Blu-Ray players sometime in the not too distant future (along with any other manufacturers that were still supporting HD-DVD).

I'm glad to see it resolved. These format wars really suck for consumers.

The Blu Ray format technology is owned by Sony.

Sony gets a cut of every Blu Ray player or disc sold and will continue to until the patents runs out.

No it's not. Sony is one of a bunch of companies that own various patents that affect blu-ray. They do not solely own the technology.
