It's always been like that. If you have nothing at QB your done. Look at that crap we fielded after Cousins was hurt. We couldn't score and it was an embarrassment. Not even worth watching that BS. Our team never would have went to those SB if we didn't get Fran back. We wasted better teams in 70 and 71 because nothing at QB. But picking a QB top 5 gets fans excited. They think that's all you need. We have a top 5 now this year in Darnold. He can't throw an accurate ball. Useless.fiestavike wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 7:15 pm The game has changed. The trenches are a must have. There's no way around that.makila wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 7:23 pmGotcha! I don't agree. Game favors passing offense now, absolutely. Still think the trenches are the most important. I follow your logic if that's end all, be all, though. Thanks for reasonably discussing. : )fiestavike wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 7:15 pm The game has changed. It might as well be called QB ball, not football. Re: 2024 Free Agents
Well the 49ers picked a franchise guy number 3 who basically is worthless and a 3rd string QB. It didn't get them fired because they understand that you need to draft well. If KAM starts hitting on a bunch of picks he will be safe. He has proven he can't do that based on his 1st 2 drafts. Sure you can say that's not enough time. It's more than enough time.allday1991 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 5:53 pmTo play devils advocate if qb is a position of need and a gm doesn’t take a swing and draft a qb, and then some of those QBs turn out to be good would be enough to get you fired as well as a gm. You neglected the most important position cause you were scared of losing your job and another team got him. That would be bye bye imo.makila wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 5:36 pm
I'd frame it this way, it isn't "a franchise qb". It's the opportunity to try and swing for one. Absolutely no guarantee.
They miss and I suspect most fans would be livid in that scenario. And they lose their jobs.
It's about how confident THEY are if they think they can get a franchise qb.
How many QBs does a gm usually get to draft before they lose their job? May as well make it a good one.
Re: 2024 Free Agents
If they are tanking why sign this guy? He's basically finished. What's wrong with Chandler or the guy they drafted last year or the eventual pick this year. They are moving in every direction. That tells me there is no overall plan in place.
Re: 2024 Free Agents
I don't know enough about Greenard to fairly give an opinion.
On the surface it seems like good moves. Multiple evaluators are fans of both Greenard and Van Ginkel. We got younger which is a positive. Greenard's stock seems to be on the rise.
I like Hunter a lot. He's been awesome here. I don't fully understand why they didn't trade him for an asset during the season. With us giving out the Greenard contract I think it minimizes any comp pick for Hunter. If the whole polling the locker room rumor is true. Yikes.

Very good chance you are correct. I hate that.fiestavike wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 8:52 am Expect this year's 1st round selection to be the last 1st round selection the vikings will have until 2027 or 2028.

I think we are going to give up future first round picks for a player we could have drafted at 11. I'm almost certain of this.Alaskan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 9:21 am100% agree. Clearing out the books and doing it right! Finally it appears they have some competent leadership. Team Building in Todays NFL starts with a QB, Priority 1!. Period! Coaching is Priority 1B. The Team appears to be willing to spend money on quality coaching. The Team facilities and organization is one of the most appealing to players in the League. With the books being cleared out of big dead weight contracts for ageing, overvalued players they will be in a position to sign younger proven talent in Free agency going forward (at least while the Franchise guy is on a rookie deal). They will have all the pieces around him for him to thrive early in his career.fiestavike wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 8:52 am Expect this year's 1st round selection to be the last 1st round selection the vikings will have until 2027 or 2028.
For the first time in 6-7 seasons I feel some excitement as a fan. Its time to roll the dice! Enough being OK with being an average organization.

Re: 2024 Free Agents
That is the likely cost to move up to 2.Cliff wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 11:36 amThere's no way they drop 4 1st rounders.fiestavike wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 10:57 am
That's the challenge.
2024 1st
2024 2nd
2025 1st
2025 2nd
2026 1st
2027 1st
Probably take something like that. Or one of those teams liking a qb likely available at 11 and still able to collect a haul to drop down.

Re: 2024 Free Agents
I hate the idea of trading up for a qb in this draft. Williams and Daniel's will cost too much and we can get as good or better at 11 than we can trading up.

You get it wrong you've destroyed your team and odds are 90% you get it wrong. There's a point where it's too expensive.fiestavike wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 1:40 pmUnless the Vikings expect to tank and grab a qb with a top 2-3 pick next year, they have to do something.Alaskan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 12, 2024 12:54 pm
Are 1st and 2nd rounders really that valuable if you don’t have the Priority 1 missing piece to the puzzle? Quality coaching, tenure of said coaching staff, continuity in the system’s put in place by the coaching staff and drafting and signing FA players that fit those systems are far more important than draft position IMO. A little research on the analytics of draft bust rates will show you that. It’s not to say that 1st and 2nds aren’t more valuable than 6th’s and 7ths, but as it relates to getting your franchise QB it is a no brainer. If you think you have your guy in this draft……go get him! Don’t settle. What have they got to lose by not going after him? More mediocrity?……..because that’s where this franchise has been stuck
3-4 1st round picks for your franchise QB is a small price to pay...you just can't whiff on the pick.
I expect the Vikings will do what it takes to move up for their top guy if he is available at 2-3, pretty much whatever the cost.
