Here's some news that may fly under the radar, but carries a lot of importance nonetheless. It regards the recent development with the CBA as it relates to Covid.
CBS Sports wrote:Regarding players that elect to opt out of the 2020 season, the league and players agreed to remove those players' prorated signing bonuses from their team's 2020 books and roll them over to the following season, potentially creating millions in cap room that can be used to either replace those players for this season or be rolled over to the 2021 season, allowing those teams to offset the impact of the expected salary cap drop.
That means the Vikings just gained an extra $2.1 million toward the 2020 salary cap, an amount that represents the prorated portion of Michael Pierce's signing bonus, as well as his workout bonus. In total, the Vikings save about $5 million toward the 2020 cap because of his decision to opt out.

The Vikings can use that money toward extending Dalvin Cook, bringing back Everson Griffen, etc. Of course, we're losing a run-stuffing DT, but we were going to lose him anyway. It also extends Pierce for an extra year without costing anything extra. This is good news.

thanks Kapp, good news.

does this mean that his contract is the same length; we lose 2020 but gain a year on the back end? Or did I misinterpret that?

You are correct. The contract is the same length, but it starts next year instead of this year.

Since he is considered a high-risk case due to asthma, the Vikings have to pay him a $350K stipend, which does count against the salary cap.

Yeah it is a good move but Vikings could have gotten him for free since Raiders was about to release him
If he stays on the roster, it's well worth one of the twenty-three 7th round picks Slick Rick will have accumulated by then.

he failed his physical. We cut him already.

Good News Jefferson is off the COVID-19 list. :govikes:
Bad News Watts is on it. :hitfan:

On the cynical side ... how nice would it be to have your employer pay you $350,000 to not work?

Seriously.

What worries me most about this is he's not the type of player that you want to have an entire year off. He has struggles with his weight just over an offseason, 12 months is a really long time to stay disciplined and in football shape.

It sure would be nice to dream! We could get $350,000 and retire if we want to!

Deadline to opt out is at 4 pm so it will be interesting to see if any Vikings will opt out before the deadline

That's a soft deadline. They will be extending it for all kinds of reasons.

Pierce is the only player to opt out, Vikings are fortunate that no other players opted out

Cam Smith had heart surgery and is out for the season. Sounds like he is very lucky they caught it when they did.
