Most mock drafts I have seen have Risner going in the first, with several having the Vikings taking him at 18. His performance at the combine will likely dictate whether he is one of the top tackles taken. I would prefer them take a tackle and guard with the 1st 2 picks and designate remmers and reiff post june 1st cuts.
I've seen that too, which I attribute more to the strength of this class of rookies at the position coupled with the overall dearth of established talent at the position in the NFL. Supply is limited compared to demand, which will inflate the value of the position in the draft.
WalterFootball ranks Risner as their 11th best OT in the draft (
http://www.walterfootball.com/draft2019OT.php). That write up says he'd be good value in the back end of the 2nd or in the 3rd. If Spielman wants him, it's going to have to be with the Vikings' 2nd rounder I think, or maybe a trade up in the 3rd. Based on what I know about him, which isn't all that much, I'd agree with that assessment.
I'd still go with a guy like Ford over a guy like Risner though. I am fairly certain Ford is going to hit the ground running as a guard in the NFL. He can slot in on Day One and probably be as good or better than anybody the Vikes had at the position last year. But I don't see anyone available when the Vikings pick in the 1st round who could do that at the offensive tackle position. As PHP said, a lot of the guys coming out who played tackle at the college level are slotting at guard in the pros. Risner looks like he will be a legit OT in the pros, but if they need immediate help to protect Cousins, Risner is very unlikely to be able to do that no matter where they pick him.
2 other guards to watch as possible 2nd rounders for the Vikes are Chris Lindstrom of Boston College and Michael Dieter of Wisconsin. I think both are capable of seeing significant playing time their rookie season and both might be eventual impact starters. While I don't see Spielman going with 2 guards in the first 2 rounds of the draft, either of those 2 would be hard to pass up, especially given the current state of the offensive line and the need of the Vikings at both guard spots.
