Probably, but they'd need to put Griffen on some kind of commissioner exempt list to get the open roster spot.

New Info: Vikings' Griffen battling serious mental-health issue
Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen has been battling a serious mental-health related issue for the past several weeks and currently is undergoing evaluation at a local hospital, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday morning.

Griffen was able to play in the Vikings' first two games of the season, recording a half sack in each contest, but "the situation became unmanageable this past week when they ruled him out against the Bills," Pelissero reported on NFL Network's Good Morning Football.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer told reporters following Sunday's loss to the Bills that Griffen did not play due to a personal matter, and there have been a number of reports concerning Griffen's status following the game.

"I had two team sources reach out to me to specifically refute a report that Griffen was arrested over the weekend in connection to an attempted break-in at one of his teammate's houses," Pelissero said.
Per Minnetrista Police, #Vikings player development director Les Pico told them Everson Griffen had not been himself for a few weeks and team sent Griffen and his agent a letter Thursday saying he wasn't allowed back until he had a mental health evaluation.
That meshes with the timeline I've reported. Police say they were told Griffen hadn't threatened to harm himself or anyone, so he couldn't be placed on a health and welfare hold. He agreed voluntarily to go to the hospital.

Police: Viking Everson Griffen mentally struggling for weeks, banned from practice
She said her husband awoke in the middle of the night on Sept. 16 and left the home. She said he does this at times when he is fighting “demons” in his head. She said he returned Wednesday only to leave an hour later and not return until Saturday morning.

She said Griffen wasn’t making sense, became combative and ordered her out of the Minnetrista home. He then went to the Hotel Ivy, which is where he stays during the week. She said Griffen needs to be medicated for his mental struggles and had been without sleep for days.

The officer called Griffen on his cellphone, and Griffen said he was going to be gone for about a week and was rambling incoherently before hanging up.

Police learned from Vikings player development director Les Pico that Griffen “has been really struggling for the past few weeks,” the police reports read. Pico said Griffen “has been explosive, screaming and yelling” at practice, the reports continued. Pico called Griffen paranoid and prone to repeating himself.

The team notified Griffen’s agent that its defensive star was banned from practice until his mental health is evaluated.

Griffen’s wife then called and said he was at teammate Trae Waynes’ home down the road. Griffen was trying to break in, had jumped through bushes and was shirtless. Within minutes, Griffen’s wife notified police that he was in a pickup truck with someone who didn’t know what to do with him. The man had encountered Griffen at a gas station, and delivered him home.

Police met Griffen outside late Saturday afternoon, and he was making comments about “777” — having to do with angels — and that he went to Waynes’ home because “God made me do it.”

Griffen agreed with the officer to be taken for mental health treatment. But soon after the ambulance was en route, Griffen fled the vehicle. By the time police arrived, he had returned and had his hands in the air. Eventually, Griffen agreed to continue the trip under police escort.

As a mental health professional (The PsyD part of my name), I am relieved that this has gone as well as it has. Things could have been so much worse, and the reports I have read here and elsewhere seem to indicate that the team acted promptly in his best interests. His wife is also to be commended for her transparency in getting the story out.

While there have been some reports of substances being implicated, it looks like if that is the case, that may be secondary to the mental health break.

That people, including the authorities, responded in an even manner seems to have resulted in Everson acceding to an evaluation and treatment with little more than some unfortunate drama.

Again, things could have been SO MUCH worse.

I hear you, Danny, but it still sounds pretty bad.

Fighting "demons in his head.", rambling incoherently, shirtless while attempting to break in. Poor guy... :(

Could that be due to building up resistance against to his current drugs regimen or do you think it could signs of something more serious ? The antics portrayed by some of the actors in Concussion (2015) come to mind. :?

There's a full police report in this deadspin article. Mostly the same stuff, but it goes into detail about this guy who was driving him around. Apparently, EG recognized him at a gas station and jumped into his truck to drive him around. Crazy...

Another quote about why he felt compelled to go into Trae's house:
"He also kept saying there were two signs in the front yard that said Happy Fall and "SHHHHH."

Nothing.

I only posted it because it displays what his state of mind was. He kept repeating that quote, according to the police report and along with "God told me to" was another reason why he was compelled to enter Trae's home.

Ok. I was worried that Trae had something to do with this. It sounds like hopefully he doesn't.

Not that I read. The only mention was that Trae's or fiancee was home at the time and EG's wife said that, while they know the Wayne's family, they are not that close to them to where EG would just let himself in.

Assuming even 1/3 of this is true, their performance against Buffalo is no surprise. I hope the team, and especially Griffen, can recover from this.

His wife's "needs to be on medications" comment suggests he may have been off of them. But if it was a manic episode, a possibility suggested by the narrative, it might also include substance abuse.

These are just conjectures on my part, but her comments certainly suggest such a scenario.

It definitely could have.

It wouldn't surprise me if CTEs had to do with it. The part about him not being able to sleep and often waking up remind me of stuff that came out after Junior Seau committed suicide.
Junior Seau's final days plagued by sleepless nights

"He told me he usually woke up around 1 or 2 and couldn't go back to sleep," says Nancy Emsley, who often worked out with Seau at a local gym. She said she lectured Seau that he needed to sleep for eight hours after taking one.

"He just rolled his eyes," she says.

Seau's sleeplessness goes back at least seven years. Mark Walczak, who played with Seau on the San Diego Chargers in the early 1990s, says he witnessed Seau using a prescription sleep aid on a visit to Miami in September 2005 when Seau played for the Dolphins.

"I know he's had a very difficult time sleeping over the years," Walczak says of Seau, who retired after the 2009 season. "I think it's gotten worse and worse. Lack of sleep creates huge anxiety."

I truly don’t know what to think.

Coming off week 2, we think everything is fine and this just turned into absolute mayhem. I was at the game this weekend and was at Randles restaurant when this was going on Saturday. Pretty sure hotel ivy is only a few blocks away. The last thing I would ever think is that everson is losing his mind right down the road and possibly being done for his career.

I hope to god Waynes isn’t involved. I just have a weird pit in my stomach that there is much more to come out and that more guys are involved. And I’m one of the most positive guys on this board. We might be getting B-Rob and Newman back ASAP at this rate.

Every year it’s always something with this team. I have the same feeling as I did with the whole love boat thing. And that player after player are going to start getting busted.

I hope I’m wrong

From the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine

Are Sleep Disturbances a Risk for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy? Only the Shadow Knows.
Several recent studies document that many individuals who have suffered acute traumatic brain injury (TBI) are subsequently found to have a variety of sleep disturbances including OSA.8–10 In some of these studies, the prevalence of OSA and insomnia has been reported to be as high as 23% and 25% respectively.
