We just cut Quigley. Replaced him with Matt Wile of the Steelers. Little surprised by this one. Quigley didn’t have a great preseason but I thought he was stellar last season.

Also, Ifeadi was claimed by the browns today

Vikings keep nine of their own for the initial practice squad: Beebe, Norton, Tocho, Cliett, Gossett, Badet, Dooley, Edison and Cothran

For some reason I didn’t think Cliett was eligible for the PS. I like it though

So let me get this straight.

We cut Ryan Quigley and signed a guy who has played in FOUR career games? I could see if we cut Ryan Quigley and signed the second coming of Ray Guy. But Wile (E. Coyote) has 12 career punts.

I think Spielman is becoming an excellent GM. But I honestly don't get this.

Unfortunately I think Quigley took the fall for the poor punt coverage in the preseason.

Quigley was 29th in the league in net punting yards. He was Jeff Locke 2.0. He could pin the ball really well but did everything else poorly. I read Wile was 2nd in net put yards and hang time. Small sample size but I don't think it's a very risky move.

I understand what you’re saying. I don’t think building a team on “one side of the ball” is the right way to put it. This offense has a ton of talent. Bottom line is, there’s always going to be a weak spot on every team. Ours is OL
Agreed. I just think thats the worst place to have you weak point. It controlls everything.

Yeah, after thinking about it, this isn't anything to lose sleep over. Quigley was just ... Quigley.

I guess I worry as much about things like holding for the kicker as I do about punting. Hopefully Wile is solid at that part of the game, too. We've got a lot of tough games on the schedule, which likely means a lot of close games. We can't afford to miss field goals. Hopefully Carlson, McDermott and Wile will click.

Bye Quiggles. He was good if you got to midfield but that's about it. He had far too many shanks and line drives. I'm excited to see the new guy. On one hand, yeah, he's had a good preseason but he's been on multiple teams already. You'd think if he was that good he would've stuck somewhere. Hopefully he can probably an upgrade.

I also saw the Cowboys cut Dan Bailey.

I saw the cowboys thing too. I am really torn on that. The Vikings are too close to pin their hopes on a rookie kicker, Imo. Idk. It's a tough one.

Think I'll post this here:
Hill was given the most guaranteed money of all the Minnesota non-draftees, receiving a $15,000 signing bonus and $60,000 in base salary guarantees. His $75,000 in guaranteed money was the fourth most in the NFL among undrafted free agents, according to Spotrac.

In the grand scheme, $75,000 is a drop in the bucket for any NFL franchise. After all, on Saturday, Minnesota incurred $400,000 in dead money after releasing wide receiver Kendall Wright during roster cuts.

But the financial commitment the Vikings made to Hill and other undrafted free agents who made the initial 53-man roster, including running backs Mike Boone and Roc Thomas, supports the belief this franchise has that those players will one day develop into key contributors.

Hill's journey from an undrafted free agent to one of six cornerbacks on the Vikings' roster took several twists and turns over the past 11 months.

The NFL is suffering an OL epidemic right now, it isn't just the Vikings. The college game doesn't prepare OL for the NFL game. Spieliman said during the 3rd quarter of the 4th preseason game that right now it takes 2 years (!) before they even know what they have in a guy they take for the OL. When you take that into consideration, it makes sense that they are hesitant to invest early draft capital in the position. Look what happened with Kalil. IMO, this is an area where coaching REALLY matters. If you have a staff that can get these prospects NFL ready quickly, then you have an advantage over other clubs.

Agreed. We think ours is bad. Look at Buffalo, Seattle, Carolina, Washington....I can keep going. Defensive Lineman are getting better and offensive lineman are getting worse.

Yup. OL keeps getting fatter and slower while DL keeps getting faster and more athletic. I don't know if any OL that is under 300lbs today. Randle McDaniel, Anthony Munoz, those guys I believe were around 270 lbs when they played.

Why do people think Murray should be traded? That would be really really ...not smart. He's a high quality back in a league where you no longer can rely on just 1 guy. It takes a committee.

One of the cuts that I found a bit odd was cutting Blake Bell in favor of Tyler Conklin, who frankly looked quite raw. Bell seemed better in run blocking AND receiving. My first thought was that perhaps Spielman's ego may have factored in, not wanting to cut a recent draft pick, but I wonder if part of the reason for this decision is that O'Neill could be active as a 3rd TE and run blocking specialist, where he would already be an upgrade from Bell and Conklin.

Still, Conklin is on the roster, and that might well be for the same reason that we have Carlson over Bailey, Holmes over Odenigbo, and Downs over Cliett.

Outside of the first two draft picks its quite possible that none of this crop of draft picks are good enough to make the team. Granted, this is a tough team to crack, but I hope none of them were kept out of ego and insecurity.
